What does a Sim1.dll crash mean?

An add-on gauge, invalid aircraft data, corrupted saved flight or exhausted memory can pass bad data to the simulation engine, with Windows recording Sim1.dll as the point where FSX finally failed.

  1. Find a repeatable trigger. Note whether the crash occurs before the opening screen, while loading a particular aircraft, near one airport, when opening a saved flight or only after an extended session. Test after each change so that one fix does not conceal another cause.
  2. Run a stock flight. Select a default FSX aircraft, an unmodified airport, fair weather and a newly created flight. Do not load the flight that was active during the crash. If this combination works, the core simulator is probably intact and the fault lies in content loaded by the original flight.
  3. Rebuild FSX.cfg. Close FSX and back up the settings and start-up files before changing them. Under %APPDATA%\Microsoft, locate the active FSX or FSX-SE profile and rename FSX.cfg to FSX.cfg.old. Steam Edition may use either profile name depending on whether the boxed edition has also been installed, so identify the active folder by its contents and modification dates. FSX creates a clean configuration at its next launch.
  4. Disable start-up modules temporarily. In the same profile folder, rename dll.xml and exe.xml with an .old suffix. These files load third-party DLL modules and external programmes; it is normal for one or both files to be absent. If the crash stops, restore the originals and disable their add-on entries one at a time until the offender is identified.
  5. Isolate the affected aircraft. If only one aircraft crashes, its panel gauge, model, aircraft.cfg or flight-dynamics file is a stronger suspect than Sim1.dll. Reinstall that aircraft from a clean package or temporarily remove its folder from SimObjects\Airplanes.   6. Remove location-specific variables. A crash tied to one airport or route can come from scenery, AI traffic or weather rather than the simulation DLL.   7. Repair the core installation. For Steam Edition, run Steam’s installed-file verification command. For boxed FSX, use the repair option from the matching installation media, then restore the same service-pack or Acceleration level before testing. Verification can replace altered default files, but it does not remove add-ons or reset files stored in your Windows profile.

Why does Sim1.dll crash with only one aircraft or saved flight?

A one-aircraft or one-flight Sim1.dll crash usually means FSX encounters invalid data while initialising that particular simulation state. Aircraft load their own flight dynamics, panel gauges, sounds and model components, while saved flights retain aircraft state, position, weather and references to installed content.

Create the same route from scratch with a stock aircraft. If that works, switch to the add-on aircraft without loading the original saved flight. This separates an aircraft fault from a damaged save; changing both at once leaves the cause uncertain.

Should I download a replacement Sim1.dll?

No. Do not install a loose Sim1.dll from a DLL download or copy one from another FSX installation. Boxed FSX, service-pack installations, Acceleration and Steam Edition must retain matching core files, and mixing builds can prevent FSX from launching or introduce further crashes.

Use Steam verification or the correct boxed-edition repair process to replace a genuinely damaged DLL. Reinstalling FSX over the existing installation is rarely a useful first step because the same profile files and third-party add-ons may remain in place.

What if Sim1.dll still crashes after a clean test?
