Fix slow Microsoft Flight Simulator downloads by finding server, network, data-limit, storage and package-processing bottlenecks on PC and console.
Microsoft Flight Simulator downloads slowly when its content servers are busy, your route to the CDN is poor, another app or data cap restricts bandwidth, or the installer is unpacking packages rather than downloading them. Use Ethernet, stop competing traffic, remove VPN and bandwidth limits, restart the download, and check disk activity before reinstalling.
Is MSFS downloading or processing a package?
A low network rate does not always mean the download has stalled. Microsoft Flight Simulator downloads compressed packages and then verifies, unpacks and writes them to storage, during which network activity can fall almost to zero.

On PC, Task Manager can show whether the simulator is using the network, disk or CPU. Also check the units: 100 Mbps is a theoretical maximum of about 12.5 MB/s before protocol overhead, so values reported in megabytes per second will look much lower than the headline speed of the connection.
How do I speed up Microsoft Flight Simulator downloads?
- Stop competing traffic. Pause other game downloads, operating-system updates, cloud synchronisation, video streaming and large transfers on every device sharing the connection.
- Use Ethernet where possible. If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, use a strong 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection close to the router. Packet loss and interference can cripple a large package download even when a brief speed test looks acceptable.
- Disconnect VPNs and proxies. They can send Microsoft Flight Simulator traffic through a distant or overloaded route. Security software should not be disabled permanently, but check whether it is repeatedly scanning or blocking the simulator’s package folder.
- Remove download restrictions. On Windows, examine Delivery Optimization limits for the Store or Xbox app portion of the installation. Inside the simulator, check its Data settings for a configured bandwidth or total-data limit. These are separate controls: changing an in-sim streaming limit may not affect the initial platform download.
- Check available storage. Leave more free space than the displayed download size because packages may need temporary room for both compressed and extracted data. Do not move the Packages folder while an update is running.
- Restart cleanly once. Close Microsoft Flight Simulator and its platform client fully, restart the PC or console, and power-cycle the router if other devices are also slow. Sign back into the same account that owns the simulator.
- Check for a service problem. If the connection works normally elsewhere but the simulator suddenly becomes slow, inspect the relevant Microsoft, Xbox or PlayStation service status. Server congestion is fixed by waiting and trying later, not by reinstalling.
If an update remains on one package, continually returns to an earlier percentage or reports an installation error, use our safe recovery steps for stuck and looping MSFS updates. Deleting the entire Official or Packages directory is not an appropriate first response because it forces a complete redownload.
Why is MSFS slow when my internet is fast?
A speed test measures the route to its own nearby server, not the route to Microsoft Flight Simulator’s content server. CDN congestion, poor routing, Wi-Fi packet loss and a single slow transfer can therefore produce disappointing MSFS speeds on an otherwise fast connection.
Storage is another common bottleneck. If network usage repeatedly drops while disk or CPU activity rises, the installer is probably processing content. An SSD and adequate free space help, but there is no benefit in interrupting a healthy unpacking phase.
Changing DNS servers rarely fixes sustained throughput once a connection has been established. We also advise against copied registry edits and TCP auto-tuning commands: they can reduce performance and make the underlying fault harder to identify.
Does the fix differ between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024?

The same principles apply on console, although the operating system controls the base download queue. MSFS 2020 is available only on PC and Xbox, while MSFS 2024 also runs on PlayStation 5. Avoid playing another bandwidth-heavy title while the console is downloading or updating the simulator.
Should I clear the rolling cache or reinstall MSFS?

A full reinstall should be the last resort. First establish whether the bottleneck is the CDN, local network, storage or package processing, then use the platform’s repair or verification option where available. Reinstalling during a server or routing problem merely repeats the same slow transfer from the beginning.
