What is Microsoft Flight Simulator? Learn how MSFS models flight, streams the whole world, what you can do, and how MSFS 2020 compares with 2024.
Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) is a civil aviation simulator that lets you fly aircraft across a digital model of the whole Earth. It works by combining your control inputs with real-time calculations for aerodynamics, aircraft systems, weather and terrain, while your PC or console renders the cockpit and outside world.
The name covers a series dating back to the early home-computer era, although MSFS now usually means Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Both support anything from a short sightseeing flight in a piston aircraft to planned airline operations using detailed cockpit procedures.
How does Microsoft Flight Simulator work?
Microsoft Flight Simulator repeatedly calculates how an aircraft should respond to its controls, systems and surrounding air, then displays the resulting movement inside a global virtual environment.
- You provide control inputs: a joystick, yoke, gamepad, keyboard, pedals or cockpit hardware operates the control surfaces, throttle, brakes, trim and aircraft systems.
- The flight model calculates forces: the simulator evaluates lift, drag, thrust, weight, air density, wind and the aircraft's configuration. These calculations update its attitude, airspeed, altitude and position at each simulation step.
- The aircraft model runs its systems: engines, fuel, electrics, hydraulics, navigation equipment, flight computers and autopilot respond according to the modelling supplied with that aircraft. A basic trainer may simplify these systems; a detailed airliner can simulate extensive start-up, navigation and failure logic.

- The world and instruments are drawn: the processor handles simulation tasks while the graphics hardware renders the cockpit, aircraft, terrain, buildings, clouds and lighting. Audio and compatible feedback hardware provide additional cues.
The flight simulation and graphics rendering normally happen on your own device. MSFS may download scenery and live-service data while you fly, but this is not the same as receiving a remotely rendered video stream.
Does Microsoft Flight Simulator have the whole world?
Yes, Microsoft Flight Simulator provides a flyable model of the entire Earth, but it is not a perfect photographic copy of every place and building.
The simulator combines elevation data, aerial or satellite imagery, procedural buildings and vegetation, photogrammetry in supported locations, and individually modelled airports and landmarks. Detail varies sharply: one city may contain recognisable three-dimensional structures, while another is represented by generic buildings placed over imagery.
Airports also vary. Major locations may have carefully modelled terminals and ground markings, whereas a smaller airfield may use generated buildings or contain imperfect runway, elevation and taxiway data. A global world should therefore be understood as global geographic coverage, not uniform street-level accuracy.
Does Microsoft Flight Simulator need an internet connection?
An internet connection is needed for the complete experience, including installation and updates, high-detail world streaming, live weather and multiplayer.
Limited offline use may be possible with locally installed or cached data, depending on the version, platform and content involved. It will not reproduce the full online world. If the connection fails, local flight calculations may continue, but imagery can become generic and streamed packages or online services may stop working.
Blurry terrain is not automatically a graphics-card problem. Check that online world data has not been disabled, that any data limit has not been reached, and that another download is not saturating the connection. Graphics settings determine how the device draws available scenery; bandwidth affects how quickly streamed scenery arrives.
Is MSFS 2024 streamed or installed?
MSFS 2024 is both installed and streamed: its core application and required local files run on the device, while a larger proportion of world and package content is delivered on demand.
Some content may be stored locally or retained in a cache, subject to the package and platform. Streaming reduces the need to keep every possible aircraft and world asset permanently installed, but it increases dependence on connection quality and online services. The displayed installation size therefore does not represent all the data the simulator may transfer over time.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 also streams global scenery, but it generally has a more established local-package model. Neither version stores a complete high-detail copy of Earth on the drive.
What is the point of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and what do you do?
The point of Microsoft Flight Simulator is to operate aircraft and experience aviation at whatever level of structure or realism you choose.
- Fly anywhere: select an aircraft, departure point, destination, weather and time, or simply begin airborne over a place you want to see.
- Learn basic flying: practise take-offs, landings, turns, trimming, navigation and cockpit familiarisation using training aircraft and assistance options.
- Operate complex aircraft: plan routes, programme navigation systems, manage fuel and automation, and follow realistic cockpit flows where the aircraft supports them.
- Complete structured activities: training lessons, landing challenges and other activities provide objectives. MSFS 2024 adds a career mode and a wider range of aviation jobs and missions.

Free Flight has no mandatory campaign, score or win condition. You can conduct a realistic scheduled flight, practise one landing repeatedly, follow roads through familiar countryside or leave many procedures automated. It is primarily a civil simulator rather than a combat game.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 vs 2024: what is the difference?
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is a separate successor to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, adding career progression, more structured activities and greater use of on-demand content delivery.

The 2024 PlayStation release is the first Flight Simulator released on a PlayStation console. PSVR2 support forms part of a free update for the PlayStation version in 2026.
Add-on compatibility is not universal. Many products made for 2020 may work in 2024 or receive an updated version, but this depends on the aircraft, scenery, utility and platform. On PC, do not copy an entire Community folder into 2024 and assume everything will behave correctly; test packages individually and use versions explicitly declared compatible.
Choose 2024 when career activities, PlayStation availability or its newer content system matters most. Retaining 2020 can make sense when an established collection of aircraft, scenery and hardware profiles is central to how you fly. Both versions still offer global Free Flight.
Is Microsoft Flight Simulator a game or a real simulator?
Microsoft Flight Simulator is consumer entertainment software built around genuine flight-simulation principles, but a normal home installation is not an approved flight-training device by itself.
It can help with cockpit orientation, instrument scanning, navigation concepts, checklist discipline and understanding how control, power and trim interact. It cannot reproduce physical acceleration, every aerodynamic edge case, all system faults or the consequences of real flight. Built-in air traffic control, traffic and scenery also contain simplifications and occasional errors.
Realism depends heavily on the aircraft. The core simulator supplies the environment and flight framework, while each aircraft's configuration and custom systems determine the depth of its engines, avionics and automation. Assistance options such as auto-rudder, assisted controls and AI piloting can also change the expected behaviour.
How does Microsoft Flight Simulator work on Windows and consoles?
On a supported Windows PC or console, Microsoft Flight Simulator runs as a locally installed application, with the device calculating the flight and rendering the view while online services supply selected data.
A Windows PC generally offers the widest choice of peripherals, add-ons and external utilities. Consoles provide a fixed hardware target but support a narrower range of accessories and modifications. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is limited to PC and Xbox Series X|S, while Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 also supports PS5 and PS5 Pro.
What do you need to start flying?
You need a supported device, adequate storage space, a suitable controller and a dependable connection if you want the full streamed world and online features.
- Controls: a gamepad is enough to begin, while a joystick or yoke provides finer analogue pitch and roll control. Rudder pedals and a separate throttle are useful but optional. Keyboard-only flying is possible, although key presses provide poor fine control compared with an analogue axis.
- Storage: leave headroom for the simulator, updates, cached data and any locally installed aircraft or scenery. Required space changes as packages and updates are added.
- Internet: use a stable connection for installation, updates, authentication and streamed scenery. Live weather and multiplayer also depend on online services.
- Aircraft choice: learn in a simple piston trainer before moving to an airliner with flight computers, multiple electrical sources and detailed start-up procedures.
What is the quickest way to learn the controls?
The quickest approach is to configure only the essential axes and commands, complete a short flight in calm conditions, and add complexity after the aircraft is under control.
- Create a clean control profile: disconnect unused devices or remove unwanted assignments so that one axis does not receive commands from two controllers.

- Start simply: choose a small trainer, daylight, calm weather and a runway start with the engine running. Practise maintaining speed and altitude before attempting complex navigation.

Why is the aircraft not responding properly?
Unexpected aircraft behaviour is most often caused by control assignments, assistance settings, aircraft configuration or missing streamed data rather than a broken flight model.
- Controls move by themselves: look for duplicate axis assignments, an AI assistance option or a noisy controller axis. Add a small dead zone only when the hardware does not centre cleanly.
- The aircraft will not move: release the parking brake, remove wheel chocks or tie-downs where modelled, confirm the engine is producing power, and check that the throttle axis is not reversed.
- The aircraft veers on take-off: first check crosswind, propeller effects and rudder input. If the movement is abrupt or continues without cause, inspect duplicated steering and rudder bindings.
- Scenery is blurry or generic: confirm that online world data is enabled and the connection is not restricted. Lowering cockpit texture quality will not repair missing streamed terrain.
- Frame rate is low: this is mainly a local processor, graphics or settings problem. Traffic density, render scaling, glass-cockpit workload and complex airports can be more demanding than a quiet flight over rural terrain.
- Cockpit displays are dark: check the battery, external power, avionics switches and generators. Complex aircraft will not necessarily come alive when the throttle is moved; use the supplied checklist and the correct start state.
