Fix Xbox sign-in doing nothing in Microsoft Flight Simulator with targeted PC and Xbox steps for accounts, Gaming Services and network faults.
When Xbox sign-in does nothing in Microsoft Flight Simulator, the authentication window is usually blocked by a stale Xbox or Microsoft Store session, damaged Gaming Services data, a hidden web sign-in panel, or a network filter. Close the affected apps, reauthenticate the correct accounts, repair identity components, and relaunch without administrator mode.
How do I fix Xbox sign-in not responding on PC?
On PC, repair the shared Xbox authentication layer before changing Microsoft Flight Simulator files. These steps apply to both MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, including copies bought through Steam.
- Check for a hidden sign-in window. Use
Alt+Tabto look behind the simulator, especially if it is running full-screen or you recently disconnected a monitor. If nothing appears, close MSFS, the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and Steam where applicable, then restart Windows. - Synchronise the Windows clock. Enable automatic time and time-zone settings, then synchronise the clock. Microsoft account tokens can be rejected without a useful message when the computer's date or time is wrong.
- Sign out and back in cleanly. For a Microsoft Store or Game Pass installation, sign into the Store account supplying the licence and the Xbox app with the gamertag you intend to use. Using the same Microsoft account for both is the cleanest troubleshooting baseline. A Steam licence still requires a valid Xbox profile for MSFS services.
- Remove forced administrator mode. Do not run MSFS or Steam as administrator while the Xbox app is running normally. Mixed privilege levels can prevent the account window from handing its result back to the simulator.
- Update and repair Xbox components. Install pending updates for Windows, the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and Gaming Services. In Windows Installed apps, open the advanced options for the Xbox app and Gaming Services and use Repair first. Restart the PC; use Reset only if repair changes nothing, then sign in again.
- Clear the Store cache. Run
wsreset.exe, allow Microsoft Store to reopen, and recheck its account. If the embedded account panel still never appears and Windows offers a repair option for its web sign-in runtime, repair that component as well. - Restore disabled Xbox services. Privacy scripts and Windows “debloat” tools sometimes disable Xbox Live Auth Manager or Gaming Services. Return Xbox authentication services to their default startup behaviour rather than forcing every Xbox service to run continuously.
- Test without network filtering. Temporarily disconnect any VPN or proxy and disable custom DNS filtering, then try another connection if available. If sign-in works there, allow Microsoft and Xbox authentication traffic through the original filter instead of leaving security software disabled.
If the button starts producing error 0x80070005, the problem has moved from a silent authentication failure to an access or licence fault; use our specific steps for repairing MSFS error 0x80070005.
Why does Xbox sign-in work in the app but not MSFS?
If the Xbox app signs in normally but Microsoft Flight Simulator does not, the account itself is probably valid; the remaining suspects are a hidden authentication panel, mismatched permissions, a stale simulator process or software injecting an overlay.
- Start MSFS from the library that owns the installation rather than an old desktop shortcut.
- Close third-party overlays, monitoring tools and add-on launchers for one test.
- Confirm that MSFS, Steam where used, and the Xbox app are running under the same Windows user and at normal privilege level.
- Do not delete the
OfficialorCommunityfolders merely to repair Xbox authentication. Those packages are not where the Windows sign-in token is stored.
If MSFS cannot reach the menu at all after authentication is repaired, follow our broader PC launch checks for Xbox services, caches, add-ons and permissions. If sign-in succeeds but MSFS 2020 then hangs on its update screen, that is a separate content connection problem covered by our Checking for Updates troubleshooting sequence.
What should I do when Xbox sign-in fails on Xbox Series X or S?
On Xbox Series X|S, a stale Quick Resume session or expired profile token is more likely than damaged simulator files.
- Quit MSFS completely. Use the console menu to quit the game and remove it from Quick Resume, then restart the console rather than returning straight to the suspended session.
- Refresh the Xbox profile. Sign out of the affected profile, restart, and sign back in. Confirm that the MSFS licence or relevant Game Pass entitlement is available to that console and profile.
- Check updates and connectivity. Install pending console and simulator updates, then run the console's network test. If several Xbox services fail together, wait for the service fault to clear rather than reinstalling MSFS.
- Re-add the profile only as a late step. Remove and add the Xbox profile again if other games also reject its sign-in. Do not delete reserved space or saved data for an account-only fault.
For crashes, licence loops or loading failures beyond the sign-in screen, use our console-specific MSFS checks for Quick Resume, updates, profiles and connectivity.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 can also present Microsoft account authentication on PlayStation 5, but Windows Gaming Services and Xbox console repair steps do not apply there. Fully close the game rather than suspending it, restart the PS5, verify its network session and begin a fresh in-game sign-in attempt. MSFS 2020 was never released for PlayStation.
How can I tell which part of Xbox sign-in is broken?
The failure pattern usually identifies the component to repair.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| The button produces no visible window | Hidden account panel, privilege mismatch or damaged identity component | Check Alt+Tab, remove administrator mode, then repair Xbox components |
| Sign-in repeatedly returns to the same screen | Stale token, wrong account or incorrect system time | Synchronise the clock and reauthenticate the Store and Xbox app |
| The Xbox app also cannot sign in | Windows identity, Gaming Services, network or service outage | Repair Gaming Services and test another connection |
| Xbox app works but MSFS hangs after login | Simulator startup or content-update fault | Troubleshoot the launch or Checking for Updates stage separately |
| Console returns to profile selection | Quick Resume, profile token or licence state | Quit fully, restart the console and refresh the profile |
Should I reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator?
No—reinstalling the entire simulator should not be the first response to a dead Xbox sign-in button. The authentication system sits outside the large aircraft and scenery packages, so reinstalling those files often consumes hours without replacing the failed account token or Gaming Services component.
Reinstall MSFS only after the Xbox app signs in, Gaming Services has been repaired or reinstalled, network filtering has been ruled out, and a clean simulator launch still fails. Never delete cloud saves as an authentication fix.
