Fix TrackIR not working in MSFS 2024 by checking clip detection, game updates, launch order, tracking settings, conflicts and USB power.
TrackIR usually stops working in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 because the TrackIR software cannot see the clip, its supported-games list is outdated, tracking is paused or disabled, or another camera application has taken control. Verify the camera preview first, update TrackIR, start it before MSFS 2024, then remove competing tracking software.
These fixes apply to a locally installed Windows PC version. TrackIR requires its Windows software and is not supported merely by connecting the camera to an Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 or cloud-gaming client.
How can I tell whether TrackIR or MSFS 2024 is at fault?
The TrackIR camera preview and game-connection indicator reveal which part of the chain has failed.
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| No clip markers appear in TrackIR | USB, camera, clip or lighting problem | Reconnect the camera, check clip power and remove unwanted infrared reflections |
| Markers move correctly, but no game is detected | Outdated supported-games list, launch order or privilege mismatch | Update the games list, restart TrackIR and launch it before MSFS 2024 |
| The game is detected, but the cockpit remains fixed | Tracking is paused, disabled or intercepted by another application | Unpause, centre and close other head-tracking or camera software |
| The view jumps, drifts or shakes | Extra reflections, poor camera alignment or an unsuitable profile | Correct marker detection before changing response curves |
| Tracking works until a camera add-on starts | Two applications are processing the same head movement | Choose either native MSFS tracking or the add-on as the active camera provider |
How do I fix TrackIR in MSFS 2024?
- Check the TrackIR preview first. The camera should show only the intended clip markers, normally three, and they should move smoothly without merging or disappearing. If the preview is already wrong, changing Microsoft Flight Simulator settings will not help.
- Update TrackIR and its supported-games list. Use the game-list update command in the TrackIR software, close it fully, then reopen it. Confirm that the software recognises Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 when the simulator runs. Our MSFS 2024 TrackIR setup sequence covers the normal installation, clip selection and calibration process without repeating it here.
- Use the correct launch order. Exit both applications, start TrackIR first, verify that its camera preview works, and then launch MSFS 2024. Run both with the same Windows privilege level; using neither as administrator is preferable unless another component specifically requires it.
- Test from a cockpit view. Load a flight in a standard aircraft and click back into the simulator window. Menus, the Electronic Flight Bag and some external views do not respond like the cockpit, so they are poor places to diagnose head tracking.
- Unpause and centre TrackIR. The usual TrackIR defaults are
F9for pause andF12for centre, but check the hotkeys displayed in your profile because they can be changed. Conflicting MSFS key assignments may trigger another command at the same time. - Enable head tracking in MSFS. Confirm that any TrackIR or head-tracking option exposed in the simulator's camera settings is enabled. Menu locations can move between simulator updates, so use the settings search rather than following an old MSFS 2020 menu path.
- Close competing tracking software. Shut down OpenTrack, facial-tracking tools, Tobii utilities and any camera application capable of supplying head movement. If ChasePlane is installed, configure one application to process the signal; our single-provider ChasePlane setup explains how to avoid double tracking.
- Rule out USB trouble. Connect the TrackIR camera directly to the PC rather than an unpowered hub, try another USB port and check the TrackClip Pro's power connection if used. Windows USB power saving can also cause a camera that works initially and then disappears.
A mistake we see often is trying to assign TrackIR movement as ordinary joystick axes. Native TrackIR supplies six-degree-of-freedom head movement through its game interface; it does not need pitch, yaw and translation axes bound manually in the MSFS control profile.
Why does TrackIR connect but the view still not move?
A connected but motionless view usually means TrackIR is paused, the wrong profile is loaded, VR is active, or another camera utility owns the viewpoint.
Temporarily select a standard TrackIR profile, switch off VR, close all companion camera tools and test a stock aircraft in cockpit view. If that works, restore each add-on individually. If it does not, follow our broader MSFS head- and eye-tracking checks for profile, focus and camera-provider conflicts.
Also inspect the TrackIR game's connection status. If MSFS 2024 is recognised but only rotation or translation is missing, the active profile may have a flat response curve or an axis disabled. Resetting to a standard profile is more useful than reinstalling the simulator.
Why is TrackIR jittering or drifting in MSFS 2024?
Jitter visible inside the TrackIR preview is an optical or hardware problem; smooth preview movement followed by cockpit stutter points instead to simulator frame pacing or competing camera processing.
- Move direct sunlight, bright lamps and reflective objects out of the camera's field of view.
- Position the sensor so all clip markers remain distinct throughout your normal head movement.
- Centre only after adopting your usual seated position.
- Use modest smoothing and response curves rather than hiding broken marker detection with heavy filtering.
- Check that a TrackClip Pro remains powered and that its cable is not pulling the clip out of alignment.
For persistent drift or limited movement, use our detailed camera placement and TrackIR response-curve guidance. Physical alignment should be corrected before profile sensitivity is adjusted.
Should I reinstall TrackIR or MSFS 2024?
Reinstall TrackIR only after the camera still fails to appear in its own software through a known-working USB port, or when its game-list update cannot complete. Back up any custom profiles before resetting or reinstalling the TrackIR software.
Reinstalling MSFS 2024 is rarely justified for this fault. If the TrackIR preview works and the simulator is detected, concentrate on pause state, profiles, camera settings and software conflicts; deleting aircraft packages or clearing the Community folder is not a sensible first fix.
