Why is DLSS blurry or not working in MSFS 2024?

In short

Fix DLSS blur or missing DLSS in MSFS 2024. Learn which mode to use, why FPS may not rise, and how to restore unavailable options.

DLSS looks blurry in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 when it reconstructs the image from too low an internal resolution, usually with Balanced or Performance mode, especially at 1080p. If DLSS is missing or seems ineffective, check for an NVIDIA RTX GPU, an up-to-date driver, native display resolution and a GPU—not CPU—performance limit.

How do I fix blurry DLSS in MSFS 2024?

Set MSFS 2024 to your display’s native resolution, then use DLSS Quality at 1440p or 4K; at 1080p, DLAA or TAA usually preserves cockpit text better.

Rendering modeChoose it whenMain trade-off
DLAAYou have GPU headroom and want the clearest instrumentsNative-resolution anti-aliasing with little or no upscaling performance gain
DLSS QualityYou need more GPU performance at 1440p or 4KBest general compromise, with some softness in fine text
DLSS BalancedQuality is still GPU-limited at 4KLower internal resolution makes labels and distant detail softer
DLSS PerformanceYou are heavily GPU-limited at 4K or a higher output resolutionNoticeable blur and temporal artefacts; avoid it at 1080p
TAADLSS causes persistent cockpit smearing or ghostingHigher GPU cost at 100% render scale, but a different and sometimes steadier image

For more detail on matching the mode to your monitor, use our resolution-based DLSS preset comparison.

  1. Use the native output resolution. Check both Windows and the simulator. If a 1440p or 4K panel receives a lower-resolution image and scales it up, every DLSS mode will look soft.
  2. Select the mode manually. Under the graphics anti-aliasing or upscaling control, choose NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution and start with Quality. Avoid Auto while diagnosing because it can select a more aggressive mode than expected.
  3. Set the overall graphics preset first. Applying a global Low, Medium, High or Ultra preset afterwards can replace custom anti-aliasing choices. Set DLSS last, apply the changes and recheck the setting.
  4. Remove other sources of blur. Temporarily disable Motion Blur and Frame Generation. Turn off driver-level image scaling, sharpening filters and forced anti-aliasing so the simulator controls its own rendering.
  5. Compare the same 3D view. Use a stationary cockpit at the same airport and time of day. Menus are not a reliable DLSS comparison, and changing weather or streamed scenery can disguise the result.

Why do glass cockpit displays smear with DLSS?

Moving tapes, digits and small avionics symbols can smear because DLSS builds each image using information from earlier frames. Fast-changing display elements do not always provide clean temporal information, so trails can remain even when static text looks sharp.

This does not mean DLSS failed to load. Try Quality, then DLAA or TAA if moving symbology remains distracting. Increasing an avionics display’s refresh rate may make its animation smoother, but it will not restore detail lost through a low internal rendering resolution.

Why is DLSS missing or greyed out?

DLSS Super Resolution appears only when the PC version of MSFS 2024 detects a supported NVIDIA RTX graphics processor and compatible driver.

  1. Confirm the platform and GPU. GTX cards do not support DLSS, and the Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro versions do not provide an NVIDIA DLSS selector.
  2. Check which GPU runs the simulator. On a laptop, Windows may assign the integrated graphics processor instead of the discrete RTX GPU. Set MSFS 2024 to use the high-performance GPU, then restart it.
  3. Update the NVIDIA driver. Restart Windows after installation. If the option disappeared after a driver change, reset the simulator’s graphics options before considering a clean driver installation.
  4. Undo unofficial DLSS file changes. If a DLSS library was replaced manually, restore the official game files using the installation platform’s verify or repair function. Modified libraries can produce missing settings, crashes or an option that will not remain selected.

If a particular new DLSS feature is absent rather than Super Resolution itself, check our breakdown of DLSS feature support in MSFS 2024; not every feature marketed under the wider DLSS name uses the same hardware or simulator setting.

Why does DLSS not improve FPS?

DLSS will not raise the frame rate when MSFS 2024 is limited by its main simulation thread, V-Sync or a frame-rate cap rather than GPU rendering time.

  • Main-thread limit: Use the simulator’s performance display. If it reports a main-thread limitation, reducing rendering resolution will do little; traffic, object detail and terrain-related CPU work are more relevant.
  • GPU limit: Switching from DLAA or TAA to DLSS Quality should reduce GPU frame time. If GPU frame time falls but FPS does not rise, another cap or bottleneck is controlling the result.
  • V-Sync or limiter: A system holding exactly at a configured limit is not evidence that DLSS is broken. Compare frame times or temporarily remove the cap.

A mistake we see constantly is treating an unchanged FPS counter as proof that DLSS is inactive. Super Resolution reduces the cost of rendering pixels; it cannot remove CPU limits, scenery-streaming pauses or every shader-related stutter.

Is Frame Generation the same as DLSS Super Resolution?

No. Super Resolution reconstructs the base image from a lower internal resolution, while Frame Generation inserts additional frames. The two have separate hardware, driver and Windows requirements, so one may be available when the other is not.

If the missing control is specifically Frame Generation, follow the Frame Generation hardware and settings checklist. Disable it while judging DLSS sharpness because generated frames can add their own cockpit artefacts without changing the base rendering resolution.

What if only the scenery is blurry?

If cockpit instruments are sharp but the ground remains muddy, DLSS is probably not the cause. Terrain level of detail, online data, bandwidth, photogrammetry and cached scenery can all produce low-resolution ground textures that no anti-aliasing mode can restore.

Use our scenery blur troubleshooting checklist when the problem affects terrain or buildings rather than the entire rendered image.
