Find why flight simulator cockpit gauges are missing or blank, then fix power, brightness, bindings, add-on files and compatibility problems.
Cockpit gauges are usually missing or blank because the aircraft is unpowered, avionics or display brightness is off, required gauge files are absent, the panel configuration points to the wrong files, or an incompatible add-on has failed to load. Start with aircraft power, then test a default aircraft before reinstalling anything.
Across Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane, the pattern of the failure tells you where to look. A dark but physically complete panel is usually a power or brightness problem; empty spaces and black rectangles point more strongly to missing assets, configuration errors or failed plug-ins.
How can I tell whether blank gauges are a power problem?
If the screen bezels and controls are present but every display is dark, check the aircraft state and electrical system before touching any files.

How do I fix blank cockpit gauges?
The quickest method is to isolate power, aircraft files and simulator-wide conflicts in that order.
- Load a default aircraft in a ready-to-fly state. If its gauges work, the simulator's basic display system is functioning and the fault is probably confined to the original add-on.
- Supply electrical power. Check the battery, alternator or generator, avionics master, bus ties and any required APU or external power. A running engine does not guarantee that every avionics bus is energised.
- Raise every relevant brightness control. Glass aircraft often have separate knobs for the primary display, multifunction display, standby instruments and panel lighting. Some controls must be dragged rather than clicked.
- Check controller bindings. A physical switch or duplicate assignment may continually force the avionics master, battery or panel lights off. Temporarily disconnect extra controllers; if the displays return, correct the conflicting binding rather than resetting every control profile.
- Reload without a saved aircraft state. Persistent add-ons can restore a cold cockpit, failed equipment or a dimmer set to zero. Select a default or ready state rather than reopening the same saved flight.
- Remove add-on conflicts. On PC, temporarily move third-party Microsoft Flight Simulator packages out of the
Communityfolder. In X-Plane, isolate global plug-ins; in FSX and Prepar3D, disable recently added modules or aircraft. Console users should remove suspect third-party content through the simulator's content library. - Repair the affected aircraft. Reinstall it from a clean copy and preserve its supplied folder structure. Do not merge similarly named panel folders or download stray gauge DLLs as substitutes.
- Check compatibility. An aircraft built for another simulator generation, operating-system architecture or rendering system may load its model while its instruments fail.
Why do only add-on aircraft lose their gauges?
Add-on aircraft depend on files and code that the simulator's default fleet may not use, so a partial installation can leave the exterior working while the panel is empty.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024
Blank glass displays in Microsoft Flight Simulator commonly come from aircraft power, dimmers, conflicting Community packages, damaged aircraft content or a required package that was not installed. FSX and Prepar3D
Legacy panels may reference a .gau, .dll or .cab module from the aircraft's panel directory or the simulator's global Gauges folder. A mistake we see constantly is an incomplete copy, an incorrectly unpacked CAB archive, or a panel.cfg alias pointing to an aircraft that is not installed.
For FSX, use the FSX black-instrument diagnostic checklist first. If files are genuinely absent, follow the correct FSX gauge folder and configuration procedure rather than scattering duplicate files through the simulator.

X-Plane
Many advanced X-Plane panels rely on an aircraft-specific plug-in or script. If the cockpit model appears but custom instruments do not, confirm that the complete aircraft folder was copied intact and examine Log.txt for plug-in loading, architecture or missing-library errors. A default aircraft working normally is strong evidence that the downloaded aircraft or one of its dependencies is at fault.
Can graphics settings make cockpit instruments blank?
Low graphics settings normally reduce clarity or display refresh rate rather than removing gauges completely.
Suspect rendering only when several default aircraft fail after a graphics API, driver or display-mode change. Restore a known working renderer and remove overlays before reinstalling aircraft. FSX's optional DX10 preview mode can also expose compatibility problems in older gauge modules, while modern glass cockpits may fail if a global rendering or plug-in conflict affects all aircraft.
What if the gauges are missing rather than black?
Completely absent instruments usually indicate missing panel assets or an aircraft that never included that panel type.
Some aircraft provide only a three-dimensional virtual cockpit, so the lack of a separate 2D panel is intentional. If there are empty apertures inside the virtual cockpit, however, inspect the installation, panel alias and required base aircraft. Electricity cannot restore a gauge whose model, texture or module was never loaded.
