Compare flight simulators with missions, career modes, campaigns and structured challenges, including MSFS 2024, FSX, DCS, IL-2 and X-Plane.
Flight simulators with built-in missions or structured challenges include Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, FSX, DCS World, Falcon BMS and IL-2 Sturmovik. MSFS 2020 offers Bush Trips, Landing Challenges and training rather than a career, while Prepar3D provides scenarios; X-Plane and FlightGear are mainly sandbox simulators.
Flight simulators with missions: quick comparison
The main difference is the type of structure provided: a scripted mission, a scored challenge, a persistent career or a dynamic military campaign. They may all provide objectives, but progression works very differently.
| Simulator | Structured content | Persistent progression | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 | Career missions, certifications, specialisations and challenge activities | Yes | A structured civil aviation career |
| Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 | Flight Training, Bush Trips, Landing Challenges and Discovery Flights | Activity progress only | Guided flying without career management |
| Microsoft Flight Simulator X | Scripted missions, briefings, objectives and rewards | Completion records and rewards, but no economy | Hand-authored civil and adventure missions |
| Prepar3D | Training and user-created scenarios | Not normally | Custom instructional or operational scenarios |
| X-Plane | Flight School and aircraft tutorials | No stock career | Training and self-directed flying |
| DCS World | Training, instant action, single missions and campaigns | Depends on the campaign | Detailed, scripted combat operations |
| Falcon BMS | Training, tactical engagements and a dynamic campaign | Yes, within the campaign | An evolving modern air war |
| IL-2 Sturmovik | Quick missions, scripted campaigns and pilot careers, depending on the title | Yes in supported career modes | Structured Second World War operations |
| FlightGear | Aircraft tutorials and package-dependent scenarios | No universal career | Open-ended flying and experimentation |
Which civil flight simulator has the best mission mode?
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is the clearest choice when you want civil missions tied to persistent progression. Its Career Mode links jobs to qualifications, reputation, aircraft ownership and business development. Many assignments are generated rather than individually authored, so expect operational objectives rather than FSX-style story missions.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 has structured activities but no unified career economy. Bush Trips guide you across multi-leg routes, Landing Challenges score specific approaches, and Flight Training teaches core procedures. Our explanation of how MSFS 2020’s activities differ from traditional missions covers where each type appears and what progress it records.
Microsoft Flight Simulator X remains particularly good for self-contained, hand-authored missions. These can combine voice acting, failures, weather changes, waypoint triggers, scoring and rewards. Completion appears in the pilot records, but our guide to why FSX rewards do not create a full jobs system explains the limit: there is no persistent company, salary or aircraft economy.
Prepar3D supports scenarios and provides tools such as SimDirector for creating controlled exercises. It is better suited to training events and customised operational situations than to an entertainment-led career campaign.
Which combat flight simulators have campaigns?
DCS World, Falcon BMS and IL-2 Sturmovik provide the strongest mission-led combat experiences, but they approach campaigns differently.
- DCS World: individual aircraft modules commonly include training and missions, while campaigns string sorties together using mission outcomes. Required aircraft, maps and other dependencies must match the campaign.
- Falcon BMS: the campaign models a wider conflict in which missions, losses and battlefield events affect later operations. It is the better fit for dynamic tasking, though it requires a valid Falcon 4.0 licence.
- IL-2 Sturmovik: supported titles combine quick missions, scripted campaigns and pilot careers. Features and available theatres vary across the IL-2 series, so check the exact title rather than assuming every edition has the same career system.
- Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator: the older CFS games contain single missions and campaigns, but modern operating-system compatibility may require extra work.

Do X-Plane and FlightGear include missions?
X-Plane and FlightGear provide training and scenario-like content, but neither has a universal stock mission or career system comparable to FSX, MSFS 2024 or DCS.
X-Plane’s Flight School and aircraft tutorials offer guided objectives, while third-party extensions can add jobs, passenger operations and economic progression. FlightGear content varies more by aircraft and package; an interactive tutorial may be detailed, but it does not form part of a simulator-wide career.
Are missions and career modes the same thing?
A mission is usually a fixed scenario, while a career carries results and resources into later flights. Before choosing a simulator, decide which of these structures you actually want:
- Scripted mission: a predefined aircraft, location, objective and sequence of triggers.
- Scored challenge: a repeatable task judged by landing accuracy, time, aircraft handling or another metric.
- Career mode: persistent qualifications, reputation, finances, aircraft or pilot history.
- Dynamic campaign: an ongoing conflict whose state changes in response to mission results.
A simulator can support several of these without combining them. MSFS 2020, for example, saves Bush Trip progress but does not turn that progress into a pilot career.
Why does a flight simulator mission stop progressing?
Mission objectives usually fail because a required trigger or dependency has not loaded. Work through these checks before treating the mission as broken:
- Confirm the prerequisites. Check the required simulator edition, aircraft, scenery or combat map. Owning the mission file alone may not provide its dependencies.
- Start it from the correct activity menu. Loading the same airport and flight plan in Free Flight will not necessarily initialise mission scripts, scoring or voice prompts.
- Avoid breaking scripted triggers. Aircraft substitution, slewing, teleporting and aggressive time acceleration can skip location or timing checks. Fly through specified gates in order and meet stated altitude, speed and radio requirements.
- Restart from the beginning. Older missions may not restore every trigger correctly from a mid-mission save. If an objective remains stuck, begin a clean run with unnecessary add-ons disabled.
Can more missions be added to a flight simulator?
FSX, Prepar3D and DCS are especially well suited to additional missions because they support scripted scenarios or mission editors. MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 can also gain structured activities through compatible packages, while X-Plane generally relies on plug-ins and external career systems.
Compatibility is the main trap: a mission made for one simulator generation may depend on aircraft, scenery or scripting features absent from another. Our simulator-by-simulator guide to free mission downloads explains what can be added and what to check before installation.
