Which Microsoft Train Simulator includes Flying Scotsman?
Flying Scotsman is part of the original 2001 Microsoft Train Simulator package. Our early account of the original MSTS Flying Scotsman content reflects how the locomotive and its British route were presented with the simulator.
The game was released as boxed software, so “built in” does not mean that the locomotive is a free standalone download. Its original files should come from a licensed MSTS installation.

Where can you drive Flying Scotsman in MSTS?
Within base MSTS, Flying Scotsman is intended for the included Settle & Carlisle route. Open Drive a Train, select that route, then choose a supplied activity or Explore Route and select the Flying Scotsman locomotive or its consist.
The base game does not reproduce the complete London King’s Cross–Edinburgh route of the famous Flying Scotsman passenger service. “Flying Scotsman included” refers chiefly to locomotive No. 4472 and its supplied Settle & Carlisle content, not a full East Coast Main Line recreation.
Why is Flying Scotsman missing from the locomotive list?
If Flying Scotsman does not appear, the usual cause is an incomplete installation, a modified consist or confusion with another train simulator.
- Check the game name. Confirm that you installed the original Microsoft Train Simulator, not Train Simulator Classic or Train Sim World.
- Restore the complete default content. A minimal or custom installation may omit routes or rolling stock. Reinstall the omitted content from the original media after backing up any add-ons.
- Use the correct route and mode. Select Settle & Carlisle and try Explore Route. A supplied activity uses a fixed consist, so every locomotive will not appear in every activity.
- Check for damaged add-on files. MSTS keeps rolling stock under
TRAINS\TRAINSETand consists underTRAINS\CONSISTS. An edited or deleted consist can hide otherwise intact stock.
Do not try to repair the locomotive by copying only an .eng file into the Trainset folder. An MSTS engine can depend on matching shape, texture, cab, sound and consist files; an incomplete package normally produces missing-file errors. If the whole simulator will not start, treat that as an operating-system compatibility problem and use our MSTS modern Windows installation guidance.
Can you add more Flying Scotsman content to MSTS?
Yes. Community packages can add alternative Flying Scotsman models, consists, activities, coaches and compatible routes. Our Microsoft Train Simulator add-on library is the relevant place to search for MSTS-format files.
Read each package’s requirements before installing it. An activity may depend on additional locomotives or carriages, while a repaint may require an existing base model. A mistake we see constantly is installing an activity without its specified rolling stock, which leads MSTS to report missing .eng or .wag files during loading.
