See which East Coast Main Line route, included train and optional timetable layers are available in Train Sim World, and what each add-on adds.
Train Sim World has one dedicated East Coast Main Line route: Peterborough–Doncaster, an approximately 80-mile section supplied with the LNER Class 801 Azuma. Optional owned add-ons can add Flying Scotsman railtours, Class 66 freight and railhead-treatment workings, plus extra AI traffic; they do not extend the line to London or York.
Which East Coast Main Line route is included?
The playable ECML section runs between Peterborough and Doncaster, calling at Grantham, Newark Northgate and Retford. It concentrates on high-speed, 25 kV overhead-electric running, with line speeds reaching 125 mph.
The route first appeared with the standard edition of Train Sim World 4. It represents only the central English section of the real railway; our overview of available Train Sim World routes places it alongside the simulator's other British, German and American lines.
Which ECML trains can you drive?
The LNER Class 801 Azuma is the only passenger train supplied as standard with the route. Other locomotives and consists require separate compatible entitlements or an edition that bundled them.

Free Roam also lets you place other compatible trains that you own. That does not turn them into authentic scheduled ECML services, and diesel or steam stock may need its path and formation configured manually.
Which extra trains appear as timetable layers?
Owned DLC can add supporting traffic without supplying more track. Common examples include the Thameslink Class 700 and East Midlands Class 158 around Peterborough, while compatible Class 66 content adds freight traffic.
Some of these movements are AI-only or cover only the station approaches, so they should not be mistaken for complete Peterborough–Doncaster driving diagrams. Our explanation of timetables, substitutions and ownership layers covers why two players can see different traffic on the same route.
Does the Train Sim World ECML reach London or York?
No. The route does not include London King's Cross, York, Newcastle or Edinburgh, and owning extra trains does not extend its geographical limits.
Also avoid confusing East Coast Main Line with East Coastway. East Coastway is a separate southern route around Brighton, Eastbourne and Seaford; it is not another section of the ECML.
Do you need Train Sim World 4 to use the route?
No, not necessarily. Although Peterborough–Doncaster debuted with Train Sim World 4, an owned route can generally be installed in supported later Train Sim World releases through the same account and platform ecosystem.
Purchases do not normally transfer between unrelated storefront or console ecosystems, and a newer base game does not automatically grant every older route. The practical differences are covered in our Train Sim World 4 and 5 compatibility comparison.
Why are optional ECML trains or services missing?
Missing services usually mean that a required add-on is not installed, the wrong timetable is selected or the expected movement is AI-only.
- Check installation, not just ownership. Both the ECML route and the train or wagon pack supplying the layer must be installed.
- Use the same platform ecosystem. Owning a locomotive through another storefront or console account will not unlock it.
- Check the selected timetable. Different timetable versions can support different layers and substitutions.
- Distinguish AI from driveable services. A train visible at Peterborough may exist only as background traffic rather than a selectable full-route working.
- Restart after installing content. Train Sim World may need to rescan the installed add-ons before a new layer appears.
A Creators Club livery does not provide the underlying train. It is only a repaint, so the original vehicle add-on must still be owned and installed before the livery or its associated service can load.
