Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight includes 24 stock aircraft types: nine historic aircraft, 13 cockpit-equipped contemporary aircraft and two contemporary AI traffic models. Why can Aircraft Selection show more than 24 entries?
FS2004 can display more than 24 entries because one aircraft type may have several liveries or configurations. Each variation is defined separately in its aircraft.cfg file but does not represent another base aircraft.
The stock Cessna 208 installation, for example, includes Grand Caravan and Caravan Amphibian configurations. Airline colour schemes for the Boeings likewise create extra selections without increasing the underlying aircraft count.
Are all 24 FS2004 aircraft fully flyable?
No: 22 are normal player aircraft, while the Dash 8-100 and MD-83 were supplied primarily as visual models for default AI airline traffic. They lack the complete stock cockpit treatment provided with the main fleet.
Third-party panels, sounds or replacement packages can make aircraft bearing those names flyable, but those are add-ons rather than complete default versions. This distinction explains why some published lists say FS2004 contains 24 aircraft even though only 22 appear as conventional pilot-ready types.
Why is an included aircraft missing from FS2004?
A missing FS2004 aircraft is usually an AI model, a filtered selection, or a stock folder damaged by an add-on or repaint.
- Check the manufacturer and model selections. In the aircraft selection screen, choose the expected manufacturer before deciding that a model is absent; FS2004 retains previous choices.
- Identify traffic-only models. The default Dash 8-100 and MD-83 are not presented like the normal cockpit-equipped fleet.
- Inspect the correct folder. FS2004 stores aircraft under
<FS2004 installation>\Aircraft. An installer designed for FSX may incorrectly place files under aSimObjects\Airplanesstructure that FS2004 does not use. - Check recent repaint changes. Broken numbering or syntax in an
aircraft.cfgvariation can hide that variation. Restore a backup rather than overwriting the whole file and losing other paints. - Separate texture faults from missing models.
