Why is pushback not working in FS2004?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix FS2004 pushback not working: check Shift+P, brakes, key assignments, add-on overrides and contact points using a quick isolation test.

FS2004 (FS9) pushback usually fails because the parking brake or wheel chocks are still engaged, the simulator has lost keyboard focus, or an add-on aircraft overrides the default command. With the aircraft stationary, press Shift+P, release the brake when movement should begin, then use the top-row 1 or 2 key for direction.

How do I start pushback in FS2004?

The default FS2004 pushback command works without an ATC clearance or running engines.

  1. Prepare the aircraft: stop completely, close any menus, set the throttle to idle and make sure pause and slew modes are off. Remove wheel chocks through the aircraft's panel or ground utility if it has them.
  2. Start pushback: click the main simulator view so it has keyboard focus, then press Shift+P once. Do not hold the keys down.
  3. Release the brakes: if the aircraft does not begin moving, release the parking brake and check that toe brakes are not being applied by a controller axis.
  4. Select a turn: as pushback begins, press the top-row 1 for tail left or 2 for tail right. Do not use the numeric keypad.
  5. Stop: press Shift+P again, wait for movement to stop, then set the parking brake.

FS2004 may move the aircraft without showing a detailed animated tug, so the absence of a vehicle does not by itself mean pushback has failed. Our illustrated explanation of the Shift+P timing and turn commands is written for FSX, but the default key sequence also applies to FS2004.

Why does Shift+P do nothing?

If Shift+P produces no movement at all, check the input assignment and anything that can keep the aircraft braked.

  • Keyboard focus: close ATC windows, menus and text-entry fields, then click inside the main flight view before trying the command again.
  • Parking brake or brake axis: release the parking brake after starting pushback. Pedals and joystick brake axes can remain partially applied because of poor calibration or a reversed axis.
  • Missing key assignment: open Options > Controls > Assignments, locate the pushback start/stop command and restore or reassign it. Check that another command has not taken the same combination.
  • Add-on keyboard interception: some panels, ground-handling gauges and FSUIPC profiles capture keyboard events. Temporarily disable the custom profile or use the aircraft's own pushback control.
  • Aircraft ground equipment: remove chocks and release any aircraft-specific brake lock. A package with its own ground menu may deliberately block the default command.
  • Bad contact points: an add-on aircraft with incorrect aircraft.cfg contact points may sit improperly on the ground and refuse to move. Reinstalling a clean copy is safer than copying contact-point values from an unrelated aircraft.

Why will FS2004 push back straight but not turn?

A straight pushback means the main command works, but FS2004 did not receive the direction key at the right time.

Stop with Shift+P, start again, and press the top-row 1 or 2 promptly as movement begins. The numeric keypad can remain assigned to views or other controls, particularly when Num Lock is enabled, so it may not send the required pushback direction command.

How can I tell whether the aircraft or FS2004 is at fault?

A default-aircraft test separates an aircraft problem from a simulator-wide control problem in a few minutes.

  1. Load the default Boeing 737-400 at a parking position at a stock airport.
  2. Use only the keyboard and try the standard Shift+P sequence.
  3. If the default 737 pushes back, the original add-on's panel, chocks, brake logic or contact points are responsible.
  4. If the default aircraft also fails, restore the pushback assignment and temporarily disconnect controllers to eliminate a stuck brake axis.
  5. If pushback works at a stock airport but not at one add-on airport, move to another stand. A poorly placed start position or abnormal ground surface can interfere with ground movement.

When FS2004 ignores several keyboard shortcuts rather than pushback alone, resolve window focus and operating-system compatibility first. Work through our FS2004 checks for Windows 10 and 11 before changing aircraft files.

What can I use if standard pushback still fails?

An external tow vehicle is the practical alternative when a particular aircraft cannot use FS2004's default pushback system.

Our library includes an FS2004-compatible TG5000 ramp tractor for users who want a separate ramp vehicle. Treat that as an alternative after confirming that Shift+P works with a default aircraft; it will not repair a broken keyboard assignment or permanently applied brakes.
