FSX needs 8 GB of system RAM for comfortable use on a modern PC, while 16 GB is the better choice if you run detailed add-ons, weather tools, charts or a browser alongside it. FSX itself is 32-bit, so installing extra RAM does not remove its roughly 4 GB per-process address-space limit.
How much RAM should you install for FSX?
For FSX and FSX: Steam Edition on 64-bit Windows, we regard 8 GB as the practical minimum and 16 GB as the sensible target.

FSX's published minimum specifications came from an era of much lighter operating systems and default content. Does graphics memory count towards the RAM requirement?
No. A discrete graphics card's VRAM is separate from system RAM. Integrated graphics borrow part of the PC's system memory, so 16 GB is a safer choice on a machine without dedicated graphics memory.
Why can FSX run out of memory with 16 or 32 GB installed?
FSX can exhaust its own virtual address space even when the PC still has plenty of free physical RAM.
A fully updated boxed installation using SP2 or Acceleration, and FSX: Steam Edition, remains a 32-bit application. On 64-bit Windows, the fsx.exe process has an address-space ceiling of roughly 4 GB. An unpatched boxed installation can have less headroom.
That address space contains more than the RAM figure shown for FSX in Task Manager. Aircraft gauges, scenery libraries, AI models, textures, DLLs and mapped files all consume it. Detailed airports and aircraft can therefore trigger an out-of-memory message or crash long before the PC's total RAM is full.
- Adding more physical RAM helps Windows and companion applications, but it cannot enlarge FSX's 32-bit address space.
- Disabling the Windows page file is not a cure. Leave it system-managed; it supports overall system memory commitments but does not remove FSX's process limit.
- Repeatedly changing heavy aircraft or locations can reduce available headroom during a long session. Restarting FSX before another demanding flight is often the cleanest reset.
- Using 32-bit Windows restricts the whole system further. A modern FSX installation should run on 64-bit Windows even though the simulator itself remains 32-bit.

Will adding RAM improve FSX frame rates?
More RAM improves FSX performance only when the PC is short of memory and Windows is paging data to storage.
Moving from 4 GB to 8 or 16 GB can reduce pauses caused by system memory pressure. Once enough RAM is available, FSX frame rates depend much more heavily on processor performance, demanding scenery, AI traffic and graphics settings. Faster RAM or 32 GB of capacity will not fix a main-thread bottleneck.
Before buying memory solely for low FPS, check the settings and hardware factors that usually improve FSX performance. For most modern PCs, choose 8 GB for a light installation and 16 GB for add-ons and background tools; install more only when other software requires it.
