To make the Garmin G530 follow a flight plan in X-Plane 11, activate the intended route leg, press CDI until GPS is selected, use heading mode to intercept the magenta course, then arm NAV on the autopilot. The G530 provides lateral guidance; the correctly coupled autopilot flies the aircraft.

How do I make the autopilot capture the G530 flight plan?

The reliable sequence is route loaded, correct leg active, GPS source selected, course intercepted and NAV mode captured.

  1. Check the route: press FPL and confirm that the expected waypoints appear in the correct order. If there is no usable route, follow our guide to enter and activate a route in a GPS or FMS before trying to couple the autopilot.
  2. Activate the intended leg: the map can display a route without the leg you need being active. Activate the segment leading to the next appropriate waypoint, or use Direct-To if you have been cleared straight to that waypoint. Do not select a waypoint behind the aircraft unless you genuinely intend to turn back.
  3. Select GPS on the G530: press the unit’s CDI key until its source indication reads GPS. GPS guidance is normally shown in magenta; VLOC feeds VOR or localiser guidance instead.
  4. Set the aircraft’s source selector: if the panel has a separate NAV/GPS, NAV 1/NAV 2, FMS or GPSS selector, set it to the source connected to the G530. Selecting GPS on the navigator does not override every aircraft-level selector.
  5. Establish an intercept: use HDG mode to approach the magenta line at a moderate angle. NAV capture is more reliable when the aircraft is converging on the course rather than flying parallel to it or sitting a long way off-route.
  6. Arm or select NAV: engage the autopilot and select NAV as required by that panel. Watch the autopilot or flight-mode annunciator for capture; an illuminated NAV button can mean that the mode is merely armed.
  7. Monitor the result: after capture, the aircraft should turn to keep the CDI centred and the active leg should sequence at the waypoint. Select altitude, vertical-speed or pitch modes separately because normal G530 route tracking is lateral guidance.

The most common mistake we see is treating the two source selections as one control. The G530’s GPS/VLOC setting decides what guidance it outputs, while the panel selector and autopilot decide whether the aircraft uses that guidance.

If the flight plan was imported

An imported route must be loaded, checked and given an active leg before the autopilot can track it.

Place a compatible .fms plan in X-Plane 11’s Output/FMS plans folder, then load it through the navigator’s flight-plan controls. Inspect every waypoint after loading. Differences between the navigation data used to create the plan and the data available to X-Plane can produce missing or unrecognised fixes.

Do not assume an imported plan has preserved every departure, arrival or approach instruction. Select and verify the required procedure in the G530, and confirm that the resulting active leg matches the clearance you intend to fly.

Why does the G530 show the route but not follow it?

A visible route usually fails to track because the wrong leg, guidance source or autopilot mode is active.

Why does the G530 route stop sequencing?

The G530 normally stops automatic waypoint sequencing because OBS mode is active or the unit is deliberately displaying SUSP.

OBS holds the selected waypoint and lets the pilot choose a course to or from it. That is useful when instructed to maintain a specific course, but it prevents the navigator from advancing through the flight plan normally.

SUSP can also appear at a missed-approach point, where automatic sequencing would be inappropriate. Press the OBS key to cancel the suspension only when you are ready to continue with the next authorised leg. Cancelling it early can command an unexpected turn onto the missed approach.

What changes for an ILS or RNAV approach?

An ILS normally requires VLOC guidance, while an RNAV or GPS approach remains on GPS.

  • ILS approach: use GPS guidance to reach the approach as required, tune and identify the localiser, then change the G530 source to VLOC before localiser capture. Set the inbound course where the panel requires it and arm APR on the autopilot.
  • RNAV/GPS approach: keep GPS selected, verify that the correct approach leg is active and arm APR if the installed autopilot supports GPS approach capture.

Do not rely on an automatic GPS-to-VLOC change without checking the annunciation. Switching too early removes GPS course guidance before localiser interception; switching too late can prevent the autopilot from capturing the ILS.

Does the G530 control altitude and descent?

Following the G530’s magenta route does not by itself make the aircraft climb, descend or hold altitude.

Vertical guidance depends on the procedure, the simulated G530 implementation and the aircraft’s autopilot installation. A supported GPS approach may present a glidepath, usually annunciated separately from lateral guidance, while an ILS supplies a glideslope after VLOC and approach mode are configured. Without a captured glidepath or glideslope, manage altitude using the appropriate vertical autopilot mode or fly the descent manually.

What does “G530 aircraft” mean in X-Plane?

A G530 aircraft is simply an aircraft fitted with a Garmin GNS 530 or X-Plane’s simulated equivalent; the G530 is an avionics unit, not an aircraft model.

These instructions apply most directly to X-Plane 11 aircraft using the stock G530 and a conventional NAV-coupled autopilot. An aircraft without an autopilot can display and sequence the same route, but the pilot must hand-fly the CDI. Third-party aircraft may use a custom navigator, an additional GPSS switch or different autopilot logic, even when the panel resembles the stock unit.
