To make the Garmin G530 follow a flight plan in X-Plane 11, activate a route leg, set the G530 CDI source to GPS, then use heading mode to intercept the magenta course and arm the aircraft’s NAV mode. The G530 supplies guidance; the autopilot, if fitted and correctly coupled, flies it.
How do I make the autopilot capture the magenta line?
The autopilot will capture the flight plan only when the G530 has an active leg and the aircraft’s navigation source is set to GPS.
- Check the flight plan: press
FPLand confirm that the intended route and destination appear. A line drawn on the map does not necessarily mean the correct leg is active. - Activate the required leg: select the next sensible leg from the flight-plan page, or use Direct-To for the waypoint you want to intercept. Avoid activating a waypoint behind the aircraft, which can make the autopilot turn back.
- Select GPS guidance: press the G530
CDIkey until it showsGPS, normally with magenta course guidance. If it saysVLOC, the unit is feeding VOR or localiser guidance instead. - Set any cockpit source selector: some X-Plane 11 aircraft have a separate NAV/GPS, NAV 1/NAV 2 or GPSS selector. Set it to the source connected to the G530.
- Intercept the course: use heading mode to fly a shallow intercept towards the magenta line. This avoids waiting for NAV mode to capture from an unsuitable angle or from too far away.
- Arm or select NAV: engage the autopilot and choose
NAV. Confirm on the autopilot annunciator that NAV has captured rather than relying only on an illuminated button. - Monitor waypoint sequencing: the active leg should advance as each waypoint is crossed. Keep altitude and vertical modes selected separately because ordinary NAV tracking is lateral guidance.
For an imported route, place a compatible .fms file in X-Plane 11’s Output/FMS plans folder and load it through the flight-plan controls. Why does the G530 show the route but not follow it?
A visible route usually fails to track because the wrong CDI source, leg or autopilot mode is active.

Why does the G530 route stop sequencing?
The route stops sequencing when OBS mode is active or the unit displays SUSP.
OBS mode lets you select a course to a waypoint and deliberately prevents normal automatic sequencing. SUSP may also appear at a missed-approach point. Press the OBS key to resume sequencing only when the procedure calls for it; cancelling suspension too early can send the aircraft onto the wrong approach or missed-approach leg.
What changes for an ILS or RNAV approach?
An ILS normally requires a change from GPS guidance to VLOC, while an RNAV/GPS approach remains on GPS.
- ILS approach: use GPS to reach the approach, tune and identify the localiser, then select

Do not assume the G530 will control descent merely because it is following the lateral route. Vertical guidance depends on the procedure, the G530 implementation and the aircraft’s autopilot installation; otherwise, manage altitude with the appropriate autopilot vertical mode or fly it manually.
