You usually cannot tune NAV frequencies on a Garmin GNS 530 in a flight simulator because the left tuning knobs are controlling COM, not the VLOC standby field. Select VLOC, set the frequency with the outer and inner left knobs, then transfer it to active. GPS/VLOC source selection alone does not tune the radio.

How do I tune a NAV frequency on the GNS 530?

The GNS 530 tunes its integrated NAV receiver through the field labelled VLOC, rather than one labelled NAV. VLOC covers VOR, localiser and glideslope reception.

  1. Power the avionics. Make sure the unit, avionics master and relevant radio bus are powered, with no simulated radio failure active.
  2. Select the VLOC standby field. Press PUSH C/V on the left concentric tuning knob until the tuning cursor moves from COM to VLOC.
  3. Set the frequency. Turn the outer left knob for the whole-megahertz portion and the inner knob for the fractional portion. VLOC frequencies must fall within 108.00–117.95 MHz and use a valid channel step.
  4. Transfer it to active. Press the VLOC flip-flop or transfer key beside the VLOC frequencies. Do not press the similar COM transfer key.
  5. Confirm the active field. The receiver listens only to the active VLOC frequency; a number left in standby is merely stored for the next transfer.
  6. Select VLOC guidance if required. Use the GNS CDI key or the aircraft's external GPS/NAV selector so the CDI and autopilot receive the radio signal rather than GPS guidance.

Loading an ILS approach may place its frequency in VLOC standby on some simulated units, but that does not necessarily make it active. Other implementations do not auto-load the frequency at all.

Why does the knob change COM instead of NAV?

The knob changes COM because the tuning cursor is still assigned to the COM standby field. The mistake we see most often is pressing CDI and expecting that button to move the tuning cursor; CDI selects the guidance source, while PUSH C/V selects which radio the left knobs tune.

Why is the NAV frequency active but there is no guidance?

An active VLOC frequency produces guidance only when the correct receiver and navigation source are selected and the aircraft can receive the station.   • Check receiver assignment: a panel with two units may use the upper unit for NAV1 and the lower unit for NAV2, but this is installation-specific.
  • Check range and geometry: VOR reception depends on line of sight, while localiser and glideslope indications normally appear only near the approach path.
  • Check the simulated navigation data: an outdated facility frequency can leave the receiver silent even though the number was entered correctly.
  • Check the approach type: a localiser-only approach has no glideslope, and not every runway has an ILS.
  • Check autopilot mode: selecting VLOC supplies the source, but the autopilot still needs the appropriate NAV or approach mode for capture.

The audio panel controls whether you hear the station's Morse identifier; it does not determine whether the CDI receives guidance. Silence by itself therefore does not prove that the NAV receiver has failed.

Does every simulated GNS 530 use the same controls?

No: the radio logic is broadly consistent, but mouse hotspots, interaction methods and receiver assignments vary between simulators and aircraft add-ons. Our MSFS 2020 knob-by-knob instructions and X-Plane control notes for the GNS 430 and 530 show how those implementations handle VLOC tuning.

In a virtual cockpit, the inner and outer knob rings may have separate mouse hotspots. Hover over each part and check its tooltip, then try the simulator's supported wheel or click-and-drag method. A custom aircraft may instead route tuning through another radio panel.

  1. Test a direct radio command. Use the simulator's NAV standby increase or decrease binding. If that works while the bezel does not, the fault is probably the cockpit hotspot or avionics implementation.
  2. Verify NAV1 versus NAV2. Watch both receivers while issuing the command; the GNS may not control the receiver you assumed.
  3. Compare with a default aircraft. If the same unit works there, the custom aircraft or its avionics package is the likely cause.
  4. Check external controls and failures. Disconnect radio panels or scripts that continually overwrite frequencies, clear simulated radio failures and cycle avionics power.

Navigation data does not control whether the tuning knob can rotate or whether a valid frequency can be selected. If the field itself will not change, concentrate on VLOC selection, mouse interaction, receiver mapping and the aircraft's avionics implementation before replacing navigation data.
