Find safe X-Plane 12 aircraft add-ons, check compatibility, install each package correctly and fix downloads that fail to appear.
You can download aircraft add-ons for X-Plane 12 from our X-Plane aircraft and add-on library or from the aircraft developer’s official download or customer-account page. Choose a complete package explicitly marked for X-Plane 12, then check its required plugins, base aircraft and operating-system support before installing it.
Where should I get free and paid X-Plane 12 aircraft?
The safest sources are an established freeware library and the aircraft creator’s official distribution channel. Avoid anonymous reuploads, especially copies of commercial aircraft: they may be outdated, modified, incomplete or distributed without permission.
| Source | Best used for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Our X-Plane download library | Freeware aircraft, repaints and supporting add-ons | Confirm the description explicitly mentions X-Plane 12; the library also contains packages for older X-Plane releases. |
| Developer’s official download page | The supported build, documentation and updates | Check the simulator version, operating systems and any required plugins. |
| Original purchase account | Commercial aircraft downloads and reinstalls | Use the installer or updater supplied by the publisher rather than a repackaged copy. |

How can I tell if an aircraft works in X-Plane 12?
An aircraft is a sound X-Plane 12 download only when its documentation identifies the supported simulator release and lists its dependencies. A generic X-Plane label is not enough because the file may have been created for an older version.
- Simulator version: Look for explicit X-Plane 12 support. An X-Plane 11 aircraft may load, but lighting, materials, flight modelling, avionics or custom systems can still malfunction.
- Package type: Confirm that it is a complete aircraft. A livery, sound pack, systems patch or update requires the original base aircraft.
- Plugin support: Complex aircraft often include compiled plugins. Check support for Windows, macOS or Linux and, where relevant, the computer’s processor architecture.
- Dependencies: Read the supplied documentation for required libraries, plugins or additional files before launching X-Plane.
- Update method: Keep the installer, documentation and original archive. Some aircraft must be updated through the creator’s own installer rather than by replacing individual files.
Our version and dependency checklist for X-Plane 12 add-ons explains these compatibility checks in more detail.
How do I install a downloaded X-Plane 12 aircraft?
Extract the complete aircraft folder and place it beneath X-Plane 12/Aircraft/. Do not put aircraft in Custom Scenery or move only the .acf file.
- Download to a temporary location. Keep the original archive until the aircraft has loaded successfully.
- Extract the archive. X-Plane cannot use an aircraft directly from a compressed ZIP or similar package.
- Find the aircraft’s root folder. It should contain at least one
.acffile alongside any supplied objects, liveries, sounds and plugins. - Move the complete folder. Place it under
X-Plane 12/Aircraft/; you can create an organising subfolder such asThird Party. - Read the documentation and restart X-Plane. Install only the dependencies named by the developer.

Why does my downloaded aircraft not appear?
A missing aircraft is usually still compressed, installed in the wrong directory or not a complete aircraft package. Check the folder structure before downloading another copy.
- No
.acffile: You probably downloaded a livery, patch or dependency rather than an aircraft. Read the package description for the required base model. - Files split apart: Restore the original folder structure. The
.acffile must remain with its associated objects, sounds, plugins and configuration files. - Wrong location: Move the complete package beneath
X-Plane 12/Aircraft/, not into the scenery or global plugin directories. - X-Plane was already running: Close and restart the simulator after copying the files.
- Aircraft appears but fails to load: Check the package documentation and X-Plane’s
Log.txtfor a missing plugin, object or unsupported system component. - Operating-system security blocks a plugin: Verify that the package came from its original source and follow the developer’s instructions. Do not disable security protections merely to force an unknown plugin to run.
