For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024, we recommend at least an 8 GB graphics card for 1080p, 12 GB for 1440p, and 16 GB for 4K or VR. An RTX 3060/RX 6700 XT is a sensible floor; an RTX 4070-class or RX 7800 XT suits most high-setting builds.
Those are practical buying targets rather than minimum requirements. Weaker cards can run the simulator with reduced settings, but minimum-spec hardware leaves little capacity for detailed airports, complex airliners, heavy weather or add-on scenery.

A newer card with equal or greater real-world performance is also suitable; do not judge speed from the generation or model number alone. These examples refer to desktop cards. A laptop GPU with the same name can be substantially slower because its power limit and cooling capacity differ.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is more tolerant of older 6–8 GB cards at 1080p. For a PC being bought specifically for MSFS 2024, we would leave extra capacity rather than aiming at the official minimum.
How much VRAM does Microsoft Flight Simulator need?
Eight gigabytes is workable at 1080p, 12 GB is a safer 1440p target, and 16 GB is preferable for 4K or VR. Texture resolution, render resolution, detailed airports and complex cockpit displays can all increase graphics-memory use.
When VRAM is exhausted, the result is not always a simple reduction in frame rate. Watch for abrupt stutters, delayed texture loading, unusually blurry textures or performance collapsing after arriving at a large airport. Windows reporting shared GPU memory does not make a low-VRAM card equivalent to one with more dedicated memory.
Is NVIDIA or AMD better for Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Both manufacturers can run Microsoft Flight Simulator well, but they suit slightly different priorities. NVIDIA is often the safer default for VR, provides DLSS on compatible RTX cards and offers frame generation where the card and simulator mode support it. AMD cards frequently provide more VRAM within a similar performance tier, which is useful at high resolutions.
For a normal monitor, choose on measured performance, VRAM, power consumption and price rather than the badge. Do not buy a card solely for frame generation. It can make motion appear smoother, but it does not cure a low base frame rate, main-thread pauses or insufficient VRAM.
Will a faster graphics card fix MSFS stutters?
A graphics-card upgrade only fixes stutters when the GPU is the actual bottleneck. Microsoft Flight Simulator also places heavy demands on the processor, particularly around busy airports, detailed airliners, AI traffic and high Terrain Level of Detail settings.
The simulator's developer frame counter can identify Limited by GPU and Limited by MainThread conditions. A persistent GPU limitation supports upgrading the card; a main-thread limitation points towards the processor or CPU-heavy settings. Can integrated graphics run Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Some recent integrated GPUs can launch Microsoft Flight Simulator at reduced resolution and Low settings, but they are not a good choice for a dedicated simulator PC. Shared memory, limited bandwidth and sustained cooling constraints make detailed airports and advanced aircraft particularly difficult.
A discrete 8 GB card should be the minimum target when buying specifically for MSFS. Integrated graphics are better treated as a temporary option or a way to test whether the rest of the installation works.
Common graphics-card buying mistakes
- Buying for Ultra settings alone: High often looks very similar while consuming considerably fewer resources.
- Ignoring VRAM: A fast 8 GB card can encounter memory pressure at 4K even when its graphics processor is otherwise capable.
- Confusing laptop and desktop GPUs: identical branding does not guarantee identical performance.
- Overspending while keeping a weak CPU: MSFS may remain main-thread limited, especially in complex airliners and crowded hubs.
- Forgetting power and physical fit: check the power-supply capacity, connectors, card length, slot thickness and case airflow before ordering.
