See the best MSFS 2024 Xbox graphics settings for Series X and S, including HDR, photogrammetry, traffic, VRR and practical stutter fixes.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 uses a largely fixed, console-tuned graphics profile on Xbox Series X|S. You cannot adjust the PC-style texture, shadow, cloud, anti-aliasing or terrain-detail sliders. Use HDR only on a calibrated display, keep streamed world data enabled, and reduce traffic, multiplayer, demanding weather and add-ons when performance suffers.
What graphics settings are actually available on Xbox?
Xbox exposes only a small set of display controls because resolution, detail levels and dynamic scaling are managed automatically for each console. Exact labels can change with simulator updates, while HDR and display choices appear only when the connected television or monitor supports them.
| Control | How it works on Xbox | Recommended setting |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering quality | The console selects its own rendering profile and dynamically manages resolution and detail. | Leave at the console default. |
| Quality or Performance mode | Shown only where the installed build and display configuration offer such a choice. | Use Quality for sightseeing; use Performance if complex airports cannot run consistently. |
| HDR | Available with a compatible HDR display and correctly configured Xbox output. | Enable after calibration. Disable it if blacks look grey, highlights clip or colours appear washed out. |
| Photogrammetry and online world data | These data options control streamed cities, terrain and aerial imagery rather than the local graphics preset. | Keep them on with a stable, uncapped connection. |
| Traffic and multiplayer | Found outside the main graphics panel, but aircraft, vehicles and players add CPU and memory load. | Use the defaults, then reduce traffic or disable multiplayer at troublesome airports. |
| Weather | Live or preset weather changes cloud complexity and visibility. | Use live weather normally; test a simpler preset when diagnosing poor performance. |
| Xbox resolution, refresh rate and VRR | Configured in the Xbox display settings, not through the simulator's advanced graphics panel. | Use the display's native output and enable VRR when the complete HDMI chain supports it. |
The console version does not provide the PC sliders for Terrain Level of Detail, Object Level of Detail, texture resolution, volumetric clouds, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, render scaling or glass-cockpit refresh rate. Our explanation of how console visual quality differs from PC-style tuning covers why these settings are fixed or automatic.
What should Series X and Series S owners use?
The best baseline on both consoles is the automatic rendering profile, online world data and photogrammetry enabled, correctly calibrated HDR, and VRR where supported.
Xbox Series X
Use the default or Quality display mode for normal flying and sightseeing. Series X has more headroom, but a detailed add-on airport combined with live traffic, multiplayer, heavy cloud and a complex airliner can still produce stutter; traffic is usually the first setting to reduce.
Xbox Series S
Start with the automatic profile rather than disabling world data immediately. If a Performance mode is offered, choose it for complex hubs, and be more selective about high-detail airport add-ons, multiplayer and dense traffic because Series S reaches its memory and rendering limits sooner.
The consoles do not produce identical image quality even with matching options. See our hardware-level Series X and Series S comparison for the practical visual and performance differences.
Does lowering Xbox output resolution improve MSFS 2024 FPS?
Lowering the Xbox dashboard from 4K to 1080p usually does not provide the same performance gain as reducing resolution on a PC. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 controls its internal rendering resolution separately, so changing the console output may simply alter the final scaling and make the image softer.
Set the Xbox to the television's native resolution. A 120 Hz output and VRR can improve frame delivery and reduce visible judder on compatible equipment, but selecting 120 Hz does not make the simulator run at 120 frames per second.
What should I change when MSFS 2024 stutters on Xbox?
Change workload-heavy options one at a time so that traffic, streaming trouble and an add-on conflict are not mistaken for a graphics problem.
- Reduce traffic first. Lower or disable live traffic, AI traffic, airport vehicles and multiplayer around a demanding airport.
- Test simpler weather. Replace heavy live cloud with a clear preset. If performance improves, the weather workload was contributing.
- Disable demanding add-ons. Test without high-detail airports, scenery packages or a particularly complex aircraft, especially on Series S.
- Check streamed scenery. Ensure online world data is enabled and that an in-game data limit is not restricting downloads. Temporarily disabling photogrammetry is a useful diagnostic when cities appear melted or arrive late, but it replaces detailed cities with generic scenery.
- Try the alternative display mode. If Quality and Performance choices are available, select Performance and repeat the same flight at the same airport and weather.
- Restore defaults if necessary. Conflicting changes are harder to diagnose than the stock profile; use our steps for restoring the Xbox graphics defaults before retesting.
