To install X-Camera in X-Plane 12, extract its plugin folder into X-Plane 12/Resources/plugins, start the simulator, and confirm X-Camera appears in the Plugins menu. Load an aircraft, enable X-Camera, create or import a camera set, assign controls, then save the aircraft’s camera configuration.
How do I install X-Camera in X-Plane 12?
X-Camera installs as a global X-Plane plugin, and the package must explicitly support X-Plane 12 and your operating system.
- Close X-Plane 12. Installing or replacing a plugin while the simulator is running can leave part of the old version loaded.
- Extract the downloaded archive. Do not put the compressed archive itself into X-Plane.
- Find the active X-Plane installation. Its root folder contains the X-Plane executable and the
Resourcesdirectory. This matters if you have the demo or more than one installation. - Use the global plugin folder. Place the complete X-Camera folder under
X-Plane 12/Resources/plugins, not inside an individual aircraft’spluginsfolder. - Check the folder nesting. The result should resemble
X-Plane 12/Resources/plugins/X-Camera/.... A common mistake is an extra wrapper level such asX-Camera/X-Camera/.... - Start X-Plane and load a flight. Open the Plugins menu and confirm that X-Camera is listed and enabled in the plugin administrator.
If your edition uses a licence, enter its registration details through X-Camera’s own interface after the plugin loads. Registration cannot fix an installation that is absent from the Plugins menu.

How do I configure X-Camera for an aircraft?
X-Camera configurations are associated with the loaded aircraft, so create the camera set while the exact aircraft and .acf variant you intend to fly is loaded.
- Open the X-Camera control panel. Use the Plugins menu, enable X-Camera for the aircraft, and create a new camera configuration if prompted.
- Create useful categories. Group views under names such as Cockpit, Instruments, Cabin and External rather than putting every position into one long sequence.
- Add the first camera. Select it, position the viewpoint with X-Camera’s movement controls, and give it a descriptive name such as Pilot, Overhead Panel or Left Wing.
- Set the correct camera mode. Keep flight-deck and instrument positions internal. Mark wing, tail and ramp views as external instead of merely moving an internal viewpoint through the fuselage; the wrong mode can cause clipping and inappropriate sound behaviour.
- Adjust movement and transitions. Use little or no transition delay for instrument close-ups that must appear immediately. Short, smooth transitions suit cabin and exterior sequences better.
- Save through X-Camera. Use the plugin’s save-camera function, then reload the aircraft and verify that the set returns. X-Plane’s native quick-look save command does not replace this step.

Which X-Camera controls should I assign?
The most useful bindings are X-Camera’s own next-camera, previous-camera and category commands rather than X-Plane’s similarly named native view commands.
- Next and previous camera: assign these to an easily reached joystick hat, yoke switch or keyboard pair.
- Next and previous category: useful when moving between cockpit, instrument and exterior groups.
- Enable or disable X-Camera: provides a quick route back to X-Plane’s native camera system.
- Open or hide the control panel: useful while building and refining positions.
- Centre or reset head position: recommended when using head tracking.
Search for X-Camera in X-Plane’s Keyboard or Joystick settings. If those commands do not appear, the plugin has not loaded correctly. Do not assign one button to both an X-Camera command and a native quick look, because the resulting double input often looks like a camera that will not stay selected.
How should I configure head tracking?
Only one system should control head tracking at a time: X-Camera, X-Plane itself or another view plugin.
Centre the tracker while sitting in a neutral position, establish the camera’s base position, and then save it. If the view shakes, drifts or snaps back, disable head tracking and camera effects elsewhere before changing sensitivity; competing view systems are a more common cause than poor calibration.
Can I import an X-Camera camera set?
You can import an existing camera set, but it must match the exact aircraft model and preferably the same cockpit revision.
Back up your existing camera definition before loading or copying a preset. Two products may share an aircraft name while using different cockpit geometry or separate .acf files, and an aircraft update can shift the model’s reference points. Displaced imported views are usually a compatibility problem, not a failed X-Camera installation.
Why is X-Camera not showing or saving cameras?
Most X-Camera failures come from an incorrect folder structure, an incompatible plugin build, blocked files, unwritable configuration files or another plugin taking control of the view.

On macOS, the system may block an unapproved plugin; use the operating system’s security controls only after confirming that the files are trusted. On Apple-silicon hardware, an older Intel-only plugin cannot be assumed to load into a native simulator process.

Does X-Camera replace X-Plane’s built-in cameras?
No. X-Camera controls camera selection while enabled, but X-Plane’s native quick looks and free camera remain available when the plugin is disabled.
