How do I install and use AutoGate in X-Plane 12?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Learn how to install AutoGate in X-Plane 12, verify the plugin, connect compatible jetways and fix bridges that refuse to move.

To install AutoGate in X-Plane 12, extract the AutoGate plugin folder into X-Plane 12/Resources/plugins, restart the simulator and confirm it loaded. AutoGate then operates automatically at airports built with AutoGate objects: park accurately, set the parking brake and shut down the engines so the bridge can connect.

Is AutoGate compatible with X-Plane 12?

AutoGate is a legacy third-party plugin, not X-Plane 12's native jetway system. It can operate compatible scenery if the package contains a 64-bit plugin binary that your operating system and processor can load.

Installing AutoGate does not make every airport jetway move. The bridge must have been placed and configured as an AutoGate object by the scenery author.

Jetway typeWhat it requiresHow it operates
AutoGateAutoGate plugin and AutoGate-enabled airport sceneryUsually responds automatically to parking position and aircraft state
Native X-Plane 12An airport built with native animated jetwaysUses X-Plane's jetway or ground-service controls
Other plugin-controlled bridgeThe matching add-on systemUses that system's commands or menu
Static jetwayNo operating systemCannot move without editing or replacing the scenery

If you are unsure which system an airport uses, our guide to identifying and operating X-Plane 12 jetways explains the practical differences.

How do you install the AutoGate plugin?

  1. Quit X-Plane completely. A full restart is safer than attempting to install the plugin while the simulator is running.
  2. Open the downloaded AutoGate archive. Locate the end-user plugin folder rather than a scenery designer's object kit or an airport folder.
  3. Copy AutoGate into the plugins directory. The resulting path should resemble X-Plane 12/Resources/plugins/AutoGate/. Keep any architecture subfolders and plugin binaries in the arrangement supplied by the package.
  4. Check for an extra folder level. A common mistake is ending up with Resources/plugins/AutoGate/AutoGate/. X-Plane may not find the plugin when it is nested incorrectly.
  5. Install the compatible airport separately. Airport packages belong under Custom Scenery, not inside Resources/plugins.
  6. Start X-Plane and verify the plugin. Look for AutoGate in Plugin Admin. If it is absent, open Log.txt in the main X-Plane folder and search for AutoGate or a plugin-loading error.

Our plugin installation, activation and reload checklist covers disabled plugins, incorrect folders and the useful entries in Log.txt.

How do you connect an AutoGate jetway?

AutoGate normally connects without a cockpit button or universal menu command.

  1. Select an AutoGate-enabled stand. A nearby static or native bridge will not respond to the AutoGate plugin.
  2. Approach slowly on the stand centreline. Follow the marshaller or docking display when the scenery provides one.
  3. Stop at the indicated position. Being a few metres short, long or off-centre can leave the aircraft outside the bridge's operating range.
  4. Secure the aircraft. Set the parking brake and shut down the engines. Some scenery or aircraft combinations also expect the normal arrival configuration, such as the beacon being switched off.
  5. Allow the animation to finish. Confirm that the bridge has reached the expected passenger door before opening doors or starting other servicing.
  6. Retract it before departure. The usual trigger is leaving the parked state, often by releasing the parking brake. Keep the aircraft secured by another appropriate means and do not push back until the bridge is fully clear.

If other services also refuse to appear, check the normal X-Plane 12 ground-service shutdown sequence before blaming AutoGate.

Why is AutoGate installed but not working?

  • AutoGate is missing from Plugin Admin: the folder is nested incorrectly, the archive was not extracted, or the supplied binary cannot run on your operating system or processor. Older Intel-only Mac plugins, for example, will not load into a native Apple-silicon process without a compatible build.
  • The jetway remains completely static: it may be a decorative object, a native X-Plane bridge or one controlled by another plugin. AutoGate cannot take control of an unrelated model.
  • The marshaller works but the bridge does not connect: recheck the stop position, heading, parking brake and engine state. AutoGate has a limited capture area.
  • The bridge stops short or enters the fuselage: the aircraft's door location or geometry may not match what the scenery expects. Test the same stand with a standard airliner to separate an aircraft-definition problem from an airport problem.
  • A different airport version is visible: duplicate scenery packages or scenery ordering can cause X-Plane to display another version of the airport. Scenery order does not load AutoGate, but it determines which airport objects appear.
  • It worked in X-Plane 11 but not X-Plane 12: do not assume the older package is fully compatible. Check Log.txt for binary, security or loading errors and use a package intended for your platform.

Can AutoGate animate an existing static jetway?

No. The airport must be edited so that a properly configured animated bridge replaces the static object. For a new X-Plane 12 airport, native animated jetways are generally preferable because they avoid dependence on a legacy plugin; our guide to adding working jetways to airport scenery compares the available methods.
