How do I join Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 multiplayer?
Join Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 multiplayer: enable online play, invite friends, match server settings and fix players not appearing.
To join multiplayer in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, enable Online Functionality, sign in to your online account, then enter the public shared world or invite friends to a group. Pilots must use the same server region and compatible multiplayer visibility settings; otherwise, they can occupy the same airport without seeing each other.
How to join friends in MSFS 2024
Joining friends requires an online group, matching server settings and a shared departure location.
- Enable online services. Online Functionality and multiplayer must be active. If either is disabled, follow our guide to switch MSFS online functionality back on.
- Open the Social or Friends panel. Set your status to online, then find the other pilot through the Microsoft or Xbox network identity shown inside the simulator. This is especially important when players use different platforms.
- Match the server region. Everyone should select the same server or data-centre region. Automatic selection can place nearby players on different servers.
- Create a group. One pilot sends a group invitation through the friends list; the other pilots accept it. Check that every member appears in the group before opening Free Flight.
- Use compatible multiplayer settings. Choose the same visibility mode. All Players is usually easiest for a planned flight, while Live Players is intended for pilots using the live environment and may require live time and weather.
- Select the same departure. Agree on an airport and parking stand. Use adjacent parking positions rather than spawning several aircraft on the same runway threshold.
- Start the flight. Once loaded, look for the other aircraft or enable player nameplates if visual identification is difficult.
A group keeps friends organised, but it does not always correct mismatched servers or visibility settings automatically. Check those settings manually whenever somebody is missing.
How do I join public multiplayer without an invite?
Public multiplayer does not require a friend or group invitation.
Enable Online Functionality, select All Players or Live Players, choose a server region and start a Free Flight. Other pilots within range should appear as multiplayer traffic. Our guide to entering MSFS 2024 multiplayer without friends explains the public-session options in more detail.
All Players is the practical choice when you want custom weather or time. Live Players is better when everybody should share live conditions. Being online alone is not enough: players using different regions or incompatible modes may remain invisible to one another.
Why can’t I see my friend in multiplayer?
Invisible friends are usually caused by different server regions, mismatched visibility modes or an account appearing offline.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Friend appears offline | Account status or platform privacy restriction | Set the in-sim status to online and allow multiplayer and cross-network play in the platform account settings. |
| Group is formed, but no aircraft appears | Different server regions or multiplayer modes | Select the same region and use the same All Players or Live Players setting. |
| Both pilots are at the airport but cannot meet | Different parking positions, runway ends or simulator builds | Choose an exact parking stand and ensure both installations are fully updated. |
| Aircraft is visible but has the wrong model | Model matching substituted an aircraft that is not installed locally | No connection fix is needed; install matching content if available or accept the substitute model. |
| Aircraft appears without a name | Player nameplates are disabled | Enable multiplayer or traffic nameplates in the assistance and display settings. |
| Multiplayer is unavailable or greyed out | Online Functionality, account permissions or console multiplayer access is missing | Restore online access, verify account permissions and confirm the required console multiplayer entitlement. |
On Xbox, authentication, privacy settings and network state can make the simulator report that it is offline even when the console itself is connected. Use our Xbox offline-status troubleshooting steps if multiplayer remains unavailable.
Does a multiplayer group put everyone in the same aircraft?
A standard multiplayer group places each pilot in a separate aircraft within the same session.
It does not, by itself, give two people control of one cockpit. Any dedicated shared-cockpit option is separate from ordinary group flying and can have aircraft-specific compatibility limits. Our explanation of how MSFS multiplayer sessions and groups work covers that distinction.
Do all players need the same aircraft and add-ons?
Players do not need identical add-on libraries to join the same multiplayer session.
Each pilot must own or have access to the aircraft they personally fly. If another player’s aircraft or livery is missing from your installation, MSFS may display a generic substitute. Different scenery packages can also place stands, buildings or ground levels differently, so a stock airport and clearly agreed parking position make the most reliable meeting point.
