Fix Microsoft Flight Simulator saying offline on Xbox by checking authentication, Quick Resume, online settings, network faults and service outages.
Microsoft Flight Simulator says you are offline on Xbox when the console has internet but the simulator cannot authenticate your Microsoft/Xbox account or reach its online services. Fully quit the sim, verify Xbox networking and the signed-in profile, restart the console, then re-enable Online Functionality; if services are unavailable, wait rather than reinstalling.
This applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on Xbox Series X|S. The message does not always mean that the Xbox itself has lost its internet connection.
What causes Microsoft Flight Simulator to appear offline?
The usual causes are an expired sign-in session, Quick Resume restoring a stale connection, disabled online data, an account mismatch, a local network fault or an interruption to Microsoft Flight Simulator's services.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The message appears after Quick Resume | Expired authentication session | Quit the simulator completely and relaunch it |
| Xbox passes its connection test, but the sim is offline | Account authentication or service fault | Check the signed-in profile and restart the console |
| The screen remains on Waiting for Authentication | Stale token or account mismatch | Refresh the Xbox sign-in session |
| Marketplace, live weather and streamed scenery disappear together | Online Functionality is disabled or services are unavailable | Check the sim's online settings and service state |
| Only multiplayer is unavailable | Privacy, cross-network play or NAT restriction | Check Xbox privacy and network settings |
| The Xbox network test fails | Console, router or internet fault | Restart the network equipment and retest |
How do I fix MSFS saying offline on Xbox?
The fastest fix is a complete quit and fresh sign-in, followed by network and online-data checks in this order.
- Quit instead of using Quick Resume. Press the Xbox button, highlight Microsoft Flight Simulator, press the Menu button and choose Quit. Restart the console before opening the sim again. Returning through Quick Resume is a mistake we see constantly because it can restore an authentication token that has already expired.
- Test the Xbox connection. Open the console's network settings and run the network connection test. If it fails, restart both the Xbox and router. Guest Wi-Fi, captive portals and filtered networks can provide basic internet access while blocking the services the simulator needs.
- Confirm the correct Xbox profile. Launch the simulator under the intended Microsoft/Xbox account, especially if several profiles use the console. The account must be able to validate the game entitlement or relevant subscription. If selecting sign-in produces no response, follow our steps for repairing a non-responsive Xbox sign-in session. If the sim explicitly stalls on that message, use the separate checks for a persistent Waiting for Authentication screen.
- Check for a service-wide interruption. When the Xbox connection test passes but Marketplace, live weather, multiplayer and streamed scenery all fail at once, the problem may be outside your console. Retry after a short wait rather than changing settings or reinstalling the game.
- Enable Online Functionality. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, open General Options, select Data and make sure Online Functionality is switched on. Menu wording and layout can differ in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and between simulator updates, so look under the general online or data settings. If available, switch the option off, apply the change, then switch it back on.
- Isolate the home network. Test Ethernet if you normally use Wi-Fi, or briefly try another connection to establish whether the router is responsible. If MSFS connects elsewhere, return the Xbox to automatic network and DNS settings, restart the router and check for parental filtering or access controls. A phone hotspot is useful as a short diagnostic test, but streamed scenery can consume substantial data.
- Install pending updates. Check for both Xbox system updates and Microsoft Flight Simulator updates. Authentication and online-service compatibility can fail when the installed build is behind the version expected by the servers.
Why does Xbox say connected while MSFS says offline?
Xbox connectivity and Microsoft Flight Simulator connectivity are separate layers. The console can reach Xbox services while the simulator's own account token, Marketplace connection or online-data session has failed.
If the offline warning is noticed mainly because Marketplace is unavailable, use our guide to separate Marketplace faults from a complete MSFS connection failure. Missing multiplayer alone is also not proof that the whole simulator is offline; family settings, cross-network permissions and NAT restrictions can block multiplayer while weather and scenery continue working.
Can you still fly when MSFS is offline on Xbox?
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 can use installed content offline, but live weather, multiplayer, Marketplace access, streamed scenery and other cloud features will be unavailable or reduced. Digital ownership may still require periodic entitlement validation.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 relies more heavily on streamed content, so an offline state has a greater effect and complete offline operation should not be assumed. Content already available locally may still work, but the normal streamed experience requires authentication and a working connection.
Should I reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Reinstallation should be the last step because it rarely fixes an account token, service outage or router problem. Do not delete Xbox cloud save data merely to clear an offline warning; that can reset settings without addressing the connection failure.
If the network test passes, the correct profile is signed in, Online Functionality is enabled and the fault survives a full restart and update, work through our broader Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting checks before downloading the simulator again.
