Why are my Logitech flight controls not working?

Logitech yoke, throttle and rudder controls usually stop working because Windows has not detected the correct USB device, the simulator is using the wrong controller profile, axes are unassigned or duplicated, or a USB port, hub or cable is failing. Test in Windows first, then map each analogue axis inside the simulator.

Across PC flight simulators such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane, the quickest fix is to separate a hardware fault from a control-assignment problem. Older Logitech flight controls may appear under the original Saitek or Pro Flight name; that alone does not indicate a fault.

How do I test Logitech flight controls in Windows?

Testing in Windows establishes whether the yoke, throttle or pedals are sending input before the simulator becomes involved.

  1. Close the simulator. Disconnect the controls, restart the PC and reconnect one device at a time. Use a direct motherboard USB port for testing rather than a keyboard port, monitor hub or unpowered USB hub.
  2. Check the throttle connection. A quadrant supplied with some Logitech/Saitek yoke systems connects to the yoke's dedicated round socket rather than directly to the PC. A standalone USB quadrant connects to the PC. The similar-looking round plug must not be forced into a computer's keyboard or mouse socket.
  3. Open the Windows controller panel. Press Windows key and R, enter joy.cpl, then open the detected device's properties. Turn the yoke, move every lever, press the toe brakes and move the rudder through its full travel.
  4. Watch the raw movement. Smooth movement here means the hardware is basically working. A missing device points to USB, driver, cable or hardware trouble; an axis that works here but not in the simulator points to assignments or profiles.
  5. Add devices individually. Test the yoke first, then its quadrant, followed by the pedals. This reveals which connection causes a device to disappear or disconnect.

Which axes should the yoke, throttle and pedals use?

Each physical control should be assigned to an analogue axis, not to the corresponding increase, decrease, left or right button commands.

Command names vary slightly between simulators. A mistake we see constantly is leaving the default gamepad, keyboard or second-controller axes in place after assigning the Logitech hardware. Two devices then fight over the same control, producing twitching, recentering or limited travel.

Why does Windows detect the controls but the simulator does not?

Windows detection proves that input is reaching the PC, but the simulator still needs the correct device profile and axis assignments.

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024: select each physical device in the Controls options, confirm that the intended profile is active and use input search to identify an axis. Check both assigned and unassigned controls because filters can hide the command being sought. If old profiles or ghost bindings keep returning, follow the steps to clear conflicting MSFS controller bindings safely.
  • FSX and Prepar3D: make sure controllers are enabled, choose the correct device and use the axes section rather than the button-command section.   • X-Plane: calibrate each detected device, assign every axis and confirm any per-aircraft control profile. An assignment made in one aircraft profile may not apply to another.
  • DCS: bindings are stored by aircraft and device column. Clear automatically assigned pitch, roll, rudder and throttle axes from controllers that should not operate them.

If the on-screen control moves and then returns by itself, detection is not the problem. Disconnect the autopilot, autothrottle or AI assistance and check for another bound controller. Some complex add-on aircraft also require throttle detents or lever ranges to be calibrated through their own cockpit tablet or configuration panel.

Why is an axis reversed, limited or jumping?

Reverse a control only once, recalibrate limited travel, and distinguish software jitter from noisy hardware by comparing the simulator with joy.cpl.

  • Reversed yoke, throttle or rudder: toggle the simulator's reverse-axis setting. Do not reverse the same axis in both Logitech software and the simulator.
  • Brakes applied when released: reverse each toe-brake axis separately. This is especially common with rudder pedals.
  • Only part of the travel works: recalibrate in Windows or the simulator, then check any aircraft-specific throttle calibration. Remove extreme sensitivity curves until full travel is restored.
  • Small movements near the centre: apply a modest dead zone. If the raw Windows indicator also flickers, a larger dead zone may hide wear but will not repair a noisy potentiometer.

Do Logitech flight controls need drivers?

Do not reinstall drivers first if every axis already responds in joy.cpl; that usually means the fault is inside the simulator.

If the device is absent, try another direct USB port, inspect the cable and check Windows Device Manager for an unknown or failed USB device. Then install the Logitech package intended for the exact model and supported Windows edition. Avoid stacking old Saitek profiling software, disc drivers and newer Logitech packages unless the device specifically requires them.

Controls that disappear after sleep or during a flight often indicate USB power management or an overloaded hub. Test with other non-essential USB equipment disconnected; if that cures the problem, redistribute the devices or use an adequately powered hub.

What does the symptom reveal?

The point at which input stops provides the best guide to the cause.

  • No device in Windows: investigate the USB connection, driver or hardware.
  • Device present but one axis never moves: check the quadrant connection, calibration and that axis's sensor.
  • All axes work in Windows but not the simulator: rebuild the simulator profile and remove duplicate bindings.
  • Controls work in default aircraft only: inspect the add-on aircraft's own control or throttle calibration.
  • Several devices disconnect together: suspect the USB hub, power delivery or the yoke's integrated hub rather than several simultaneous hardware failures.

Will Logitech PC flight controls work on consoles?

Logitech/Saitek PC flight controls should not be assumed to work on Xbox or PlayStation simply because they use USB.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, but console editions accept only peripherals explicitly supported by that console and simulator. Windows detection, drivers and profiling software cannot make a PC-only yoke or pedal set console-compatible; verify the exact model's stated platform support before troubleshooting assignments.
