For Microsoft Flight Simulator, the main full MD-80 add-on is Leonardo Software House’s Fly the Maddog X: an MD-82 for PC, with MD-83 and MD-88 variants available through a separate expansion. Most other “MD-80” downloads are liveries, sound replacements or old FSX/FS2004 files, not complete native MSFS aircraft.
Which MD-80 aircraft packages are available?
The native choice is a base MD-82 package accompanied by an optional MD-83 and MD-88 expansion.

Choose the base package if you simply want a complete MD-80 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Buy the expansion only when you specifically want the MD-83 or MD-88; it is not a cheaper standalone aircraft.
This combination does not represent every related Douglas design. The MD-81, MD-87 and MD-90 are not included, while DC-9 and Boeing 717 add-ons are different aircraft despite their shared lineage.
Does Fly the Maddog X work in MSFS 2024 and on consoles?
On PC, use only the Maddog release explicitly approved for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024; the normal PC package cannot be side-loaded onto Xbox or PlayStation 5.
MSFS 2024 can recognise many packages originating with MSFS 2020, but recognition does not guarantee full compatibility. An aircraft may load while its displays, external utilities, flight model or cockpit interaction fail. Use the installer and package build designated for the simulator you are running rather than copying an older installation manually.
Xbox and PS5 do not offer the PC Community folder workflow. A console user can install an MD-80 only if a console-compatible edition is released through the simulator’s own catalogue. PS5 runs MSFS 2024 rather than MSFS 2020, and the PC-oriented Maddog package should not be assumed to work there.
Are there free MD-80 add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Free MD-80 search results often lead to legacy aircraft or supporting files rather than a native MSFS aircraft with a working cockpit.
For example, our FSX-era MD-80/87 cockpit panel is intended for the older simulator, while this complete freeware MD-83 for FS2004 belongs in Flight Simulator 2004. An Alitalia MD-80 package built for FSX is likewise a legacy aircraft, not a repaint that can be attached to Fly the Maddog X.
Copying an FSX or FS2004 package into the MSFS Community folder does not convert it. The older model format, gauges, panel code and configuration files are incompatible. When browsing our MSFS aircraft and mods library, check that a download explicitly names your Microsoft Flight Simulator edition and says whether it is a complete aircraft, a livery or an enhancement.
Why does an installed MD-80 not appear in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
A missing MD-80 is usually caused by an absent base aircraft, an incompatible simulator build, incorrect folder nesting or a livery installed as though it were a complete aircraft.
- Check the dependency. Install Fly the Maddog X before its MD-83/MD-88 expansion, liveries or sound replacements.
- Match the simulator version. A package labelled only for MSFS 2020 should not be treated as supported in MSFS 2024 unless its developer explicitly confirms it.
- Use the supplied installer. PC utilities may need the correct packages location. Guessing the destination can place the aircraft in an inactive or duplicated folder.
- Remove duplicate releases. Keeping an obsolete package beside its replacement can produce missing aircraft, blank displays or loading failures.
- Verify the livery variant. An MD-82 repaint may not work on the MD-83 or MD-88. A mismatched livery commonly appears with missing textures or does not appear in the aircraft selector.
- Inspect manually installed packages. For standard Community packages,
manifest.jsonandlayout.jsonshould sit at the package’s expected top level rather than inside an extra nested folder.
The practical distinction is simple: Fly the Maddog X is the complete modern MD-80 simulation, its MD-83/MD-88 package is an expansion, and most other files require either that base aircraft or an older flight simulator.
