FSX & FSX: Steam Edition 6 min read 237 views

Which Microsoft Flight Simulator X editions are available?

In short

Compare Microsoft Flight Simulator X Standard, Deluxe, Acceleration, Gold and FSX Steam Edition, including content, installation and the best choice.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) exists as boxed Standard and Deluxe editions, the boxed Acceleration expansion, the boxed Gold Edition bundle, and the standalone digital FSX: Steam Edition. Gold combines Deluxe with Acceleration; Steam Edition offers broadly the same in-game content in a different build. SP1 and SP2 are updates, not editions.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X editions compared

The FSX range consists of two original base editions, one expansion, one boxed bundle and one standalone digital release.

Edition or productFormatWhat it containsKey limitation
FSX Standard EditionBoxed DVDsThe original base simulator with the smaller selection of aircraft, missions and detailed airports.Installing Acceleration does not add all Deluxe-only content.
Microsoft Flight Simulator X Deluxe EditionBoxed DVDsAn expanded base simulator with additional aircraft, missions, detailed airports, Tower Controller features and developer tools. It does not include the Acceleration expansion.
FSX AccelerationBoxed expansionAdds aircraft, missions, scenery and service-pack-level simulator updates. It requires an installed boxed Standard or Deluxe edition and is not a standalone simulator.
Microsoft Flight Simulator X Gold EditionBoxed bundleDeluxe Edition and Acceleration supplied together.Deluxe must be installed first, followed by Acceleration.
Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam EditionStandalone digital releaseBroadly combines the Deluxe and Acceleration in-game content in a Steam-managed build. Its executable, multiplayer system, installation paths and add-on detection differ from boxed FSX.

Some regional and second-hand listings use Professional Edition for the Deluxe-level boxed package. It is not another content tier; check the discs and stated features rather than relying on the seller's wording.

The number and type of included aircraft vary substantially. Our full aircraft breakdown by FSX edition identifies what comes with Standard, Deluxe, Acceleration, Gold and Steam Edition.

These products all belong to the original FSX family. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 are separate simulators, not newer FSX editions.

What does Flight Simulator X Deluxe Edition add?

Flight Simulator X Deluxe Edition is the larger version of the original boxed base simulator, not an expansion for Standard Edition.

It adds aircraft, missions, more highly detailed airports, multiplayer Tower Controller functionality and software development kit components. Service packs cannot turn Standard into Deluxe, and installing Acceleration over Standard does not supply every Deluxe-only item.

This distinction matters when an add-on specifically requires FSX Deluxe or one of its SDK components. “FSX SP2 compatible” only describes the simulator update level; it does not mean Standard has acquired the Deluxe content set.

Is FSX Gold Edition the same as FSX: Steam Edition?

No. FSX Gold Edition and FSX: Steam Edition provide broadly similar Deluxe-and-Acceleration flying content, but they are different software builds with different distribution and installation arrangements.

Gold installs the original boxed Deluxe release from DVD and then applies the boxed Acceleration expansion. Steam Edition installs as one standalone digital product, uses Steam-based distribution and multiplayer, and does not require any original FSX discs.

Many ordinary FSX aircraft and scenery packages can work with either release. Executable-level modules, complex gauges and older automatic installers are more likely to be edition-sensitive because they may look for a particular executable version, registry entry or folder. Steam Edition can also create separate FSX-SE configuration branches when it coexists with boxed FSX.

For the package contents, see our comparison of Standard, Deluxe, Acceleration and Gold. Our separate guide explains the practical installation and add-on differences between boxed FSX and Steam Edition.

Are FSX Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 separate editions?

Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 are patches for boxed FSX, not separate editions, content upgrades or substitutes for Acceleration.

  • Boxed Standard or Deluxe without Acceleration: install SP1 and then SP2 if the simulator remains at its original release level.
  • Boxed Standard or Deluxe with Acceleration: install and activate the base simulator before installing Acceleration. The expansion supplies the relevant service-pack-level core changes.
  • FSX Gold Edition: install Deluxe first, run and activate it, then install Acceleration from the additional disc.
  • FSX: Steam Edition: use the Steam-managed build as supplied. Do not apply boxed SP1 or SP2 installers and never install boxed Acceleration into the Steam directory.

The mix-up we see most often is a Deluxe installation with SP2 being described as “Gold”. It is still Deluxe and lacks the Acceleration aircraft, missions, objects and other expansion content.

Was there a 64-bit edition of Flight Simulator X?

No edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator X is 64-bit, including Deluxe, Gold and FSX: Steam Edition.

Every FSX release is a 32-bit Windows application. Installing it on 64-bit Windows does not remove its 32-bit process limits, so heavily expanded installations can still encounter out-of-memory errors. The DirectX 10 Preview option in later boxed builds and Steam Edition is a rendering mode, not a 64-bit conversion.

Which FSX edition should you choose in 2026?

FSX: Steam Edition is usually the most practical choice for a fresh FSX installation in 2026, provided any essential add-ons explicitly support FSX-SE.

  • Choose FSX: Steam Edition for a self-contained digital installation containing broadly the Deluxe and Acceleration flying content.
  • Choose FSX Gold Edition when you already possess a complete legitimate copy or need the original boxed environment for an older add-on.
  • Choose boxed Deluxe or Standard mainly for an existing installation, a period-correct setup or a specific compatibility requirement.
  • Add boxed Acceleration only to boxed Standard or Deluxe. It has no role in a Steam Edition installation.
  • Check add-on wording carefully: “FSX”, “FSX SP2/Acceleration” and “FSX-SE compatible” do not always promise the same level of support.

Can you still buy Microsoft Flight Simulator X Deluxe or Gold?

Standard, Deluxe, Acceleration and Gold are legacy physical products, while FSX: Steam Edition is the normal legitimate downloadable release.

Boxed copies may appear as old stock or second-hand software. Confirm that a listing includes the required discs and a legitimate product key; owning a disc alone does not guarantee activation. A product advertised as a “Gold Edition download” is not the original boxed Gold package. Our guide to legal FSX purchase and download options explains what to look for.

Can boxed FSX and Steam Edition be installed together?

Boxed FSX and Steam Edition can coexist on one PC, but maintaining both often causes avoidable path, registry and add-on-installer problems.

An old installer may detect the wrong copy and send aircraft, gauges or scenery to a different FSX directory. Configuration and registry branches can also differ according to which edition was installed and launched first.

  • Verify every destination folder before an add-on installer copies files.
  • Keep each edition's patches separate: boxed service packs and Acceleration must never be applied to Steam Edition.
  • Do not copy core simulator files between editions to solve a compatibility error; executable and module versions may not match.
  • Prefer one FSX environment unless a particular legacy add-on provides a clear reason to maintain both.
