Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024's built-in ATC is adequate for casual flying, but not consistently good enough for realistic IFR operations. It handles basic clearances, frequency changes and simple vectors with no extra setup, yet it can assign poor altitudes, late approaches, unsuitable runways and weak traffic sequencing.

What does MSFS 2024 ATC do well?

MSFS 2024's stock ATC is useful as an integrated, low-effort controller for ordinary VFR and straightforward IFR flights. It guides you through clearance, ground, tower and centre contacts without requiring separate software or microphone commands.

  • Immediate availability: select the appropriate response in the ATC window and the simulator handles much of the frequency-tuning workload.
  • Basic flight-plan support: it can clear and hand off flights filed through the simulator's planning system.
  • AI radio assistance: assistance options can acknowledge calls and manage routine radio replies for you.
  • Useful atmosphere: radio chatter, runway clearances and frequency changes make casual flights feel more active.

Why does MSFS 2024 ATC issue bad instructions?

MSFS 2024 ATC gives bad instructions because its controlling logic does not always reconcile flight plans, procedures, terrain, weather and traffic correctly. The resulting error may appear at any stage of a flight.

  • Route mismatch: ATC may use the plan filed with the simulator while the aircraft follows a different route loaded or edited in its FMS. Aircraft integration varies, so changing a SID, STAR or approach in the cockpit does not always update the controller's plan.

  • Late or confused approaches: vectors can overshoot the final approach course, produce extended downwinds or conflict with the procedure loaded in the avionics.
  • Questionable runway selection: runway changes may arrive late or disagree with the wind, selected approach and active traffic flow.

Before blaming the controller, confirm that the simulator-filed route and cockpit flight plan agree. Also check QNH or standard-pressure selection: an incorrect altimeter setting can make a valid assigned altitude appear wrong.

Should you follow a bad ATC instruction?

No—within the simulator, ATC instructions should not be followed blindly when they conflict with terrain clearance, aircraft limitations or a stabilised approach. Use this order of checks instead:

  1. Verify the aircraft: check the altimeter setting, selected altitude, active FMS leg, loaded approach and autopilot mode.
  2. Compare the flight plans: make sure ATC cleared the route that your avionics are actually flying.
  3. Request a correction: use an altitude or runway request when the ATC menu offers an appropriate option.
  4. Protect the flight: do not descend below a terrain-safe or published minimum altitude. Fly the missed approach or go around rather than forcing an unstable landing.
  5. Leave the service if necessary: if ATC becomes trapped in repeated or unusable instructions, ignore it or cancel IFR service and continue using your planned procedure.

The stock controller is best treated as a convenience feature, not an authority that validates your navigation or guarantees separation.

How realistic is the built-in ATC?

Its realism is sufficient for learning the broad order of radio contacts, but not for practising authentic airline or procedural ATC. Phraseology is repetitive, responses come from a fixed menu, regional differences are limited, and there is no genuine free-form microphone conversation built into the standard controller.
