Is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 good on PS5?

In short

Is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 good on PS5? See performance caveats, PS5 Pro benefits, internet needs, controls and add-on limits.

Yes. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is good on PS5: it is a native release with the full globe, career activities and detailed aircraft systems, not a cut-down console spin-off. It is best for console-first pilots, though PC still wins for freeware, specialist peripherals and external tools, and dependable broadband remains essential.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched on PS5 and PS5 Pro on 8 December 2025, becoming the first Flight Simulator released for PlayStation. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 remains exclusive to PC and Xbox. Our assessment assumes Sim Update 5, released in April 2026, or a later build.

How good is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5?

For sightseeing, flight lessons, bush flying and airline operations, the PS5 version delivers the core MSFS 2024 experience well. The main compromises come from demanding scenery, console add-on restrictions and controller-based cockpit interaction rather than a lack of simulation depth.

AreaPS5 verdictWhat to expect
Aircraft and worldVery goodThe global scenery, weather, career activities and detailed aircraft systems form the same core simulator experience.
GraphicsStrongConvincing lighting, clouds and terrain, although streamed scenery can appear soft while data catches up.
PerformanceGood but variableDense airports, complex airliners, traffic and heavy weather place the greatest load on the console.
DualSense controlsSuitable for normal flyingComfortable for basic handling, but adjusting small cockpit switches and rotary controls is slower than using dedicated hardware.
Add-onsRestricted compared with PCConsole-compatible Marketplace content is available, but PC freeware and external utilities cannot simply be installed.

What are the main PS5 limitations?

The biggest limitations are internet dependence, a closed add-on system and narrower peripheral support. These matter more than small visual differences for many serious simmers.

  • Streamed world data: MSFS 2024 relies heavily on online services for its intended scenery and world detail. Unstable Wi-Fi, packet loss or service congestion can produce blurry terrain, late-loading objects and connection errors; reducing graphics settings will not fix a network bottleneck.
  • No PC-style Community folder: PS5 users cannot copy arbitrary freeware into the simulator or run PC-only companion programs. Add-ons must be released for the console ecosystem and obtained through the in-game system. Our explanation of how Marketplace add-ons work on PS5 covers the practical restrictions.
  • Peripheral compatibility: A USB yoke or throttle working on PC or Xbox does not guarantee PS5 support. The device must explicitly list PlayStation compatibility and support for the simulator.
  • Demanding locations: Detailed third-party airports, busy traffic, sophisticated airliners and heavy cloud layers can cause less consistent performance. Updating the simulator before troubleshooting is essential because performance and stability fixes arrive through simulator updates.

Is MSFS 2024 better on PS5 Pro?

PS5 Pro is the preferable PlayStation version when image quality and extra performance headroom matter, but the standard PS5 runs the same core simulation. Exact presentation and performance can change with simulator patches, so fixed frame-rate claims quickly become unreliable.

The Pro cannot solve network-related scenery problems, expand the PS5 add-on catalogue or make unsupported PC peripherals compatible. Owners choosing between consoles can use our PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox comparison for the platform-specific trade-offs.

Do you need PS Plus or extra flight controls?

DualSense is enough to start flying, while a compatible yoke, throttle or HOTAS is optional rather than required. Controller flying works particularly well for sightseeing and smaller aircraft; complex airliner cockpits benefit more from extra controls.

PS Plus is not required for ordinary solo flying, although PlayStation online multiplayer generally requires a paid membership. The simulator still uses internet-based world services without PS Plus, so solo access should not be confused with full offline operation. See which MSFS features require PlayStation Plus for the distinction.

PSVR2 support is supplied through a free 2026 update rather than the original PS5 release. Anyone buying primarily for virtual reality should check the PSVR2 support and update requirements before choosing a version.

Should you buy the PS5 version?

  • Choose PS5 if you want a detailed flight simulator on a television, prefer a straightforward console setup and are content using DualSense or explicitly compatible hardware.
  • Choose PS5 Pro if you want the best PlayStation presentation and can justify the extra cost, especially for visually demanding airports and aircraft.
  • Choose PC instead if access to freeware, a Community folder, specialist utilities, broad peripheral compatibility or extensive graphics tuning is a priority.

For most PS5 owners with reliable broadband, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is a good purchase and the strongest full-scale civilian flight simulator available natively on PlayStation. Its weak points are the closed console ecosystem and online dependence, not the quality or scope of the flying itself.
