Fix PMDG 777 cabin lights in Microsoft Flight Simulator by checking electrical power, CABIN/UTILITY, custom controls, bindings and add-on conflicts.
PMDG 777 cabin lights usually stay dark because the main electrical buses are not powered, the overhead CABIN/UTILITY supply is off or load-shed, or Microsoft Flight Simulator’s generic light binding cannot drive PMDG’s custom lighting. Establish generator or external power, enable cabin utility power, then use the dedicated PMDG cabin-light control.
The key distinction is between supplying electrical power to the cabin and selecting a cabin-light scene. These are separate actions in the PMDG 777.
Which control turns on the PMDG 777 cabin lights?
The cockpit dome, panel and flood controls do not operate the passenger cabin. The controls have separate jobs:
- CABIN/UTILITY on the overhead electrical panel supplies power to cabin and utility equipment; it is not a brightness control.
- DOME and panel/flood controls illuminate the flight deck only.
- Passenger-sign switches operate signs and associated chimes, not the ceiling or mood lighting.
- MSFS cabin-light bindings may do nothing because the PMDG 777 uses custom systems rather than the simulator’s default light variable.
After cabin utility power is available, use the modelled cabin-attendant lighting panel or the dedicated cabin-light interface provided by your installed PMDG variant and build. Select the brightest available scene for testing. A freighter variant will not provide the passenger-cabin lighting scenes found in an airliner.
How do you fix PMDG 777 cabin lights that stay dark?
- Load a known powered state. Begin with a PMDG-supplied powered panel state. If the lights work there but not from cold and dark, the aircraft is not being powered correctly; follow our PMDG 777 electrical and APU start sequence.
- Provide stable AC power. Connect and select external power, bring the APU generator online, or use running engines with their generators online. The battery by itself is not a valid cabin-light test.
- Check CABIN/UTILITY. Confirm the overhead switch is on after the electrical source is established. Cabin loads can be unavailable or load-shed even while a few battery-powered items remain alive.
- Use PMDG’s native control. Operate the modelled attendant panel or cabin-light interface with the mouse. Do not rely on a keyboard command labelled Cabin Lights or Toggle Cabin Lights.
- Test in darkness. Set the flight to night, move the camera into the cabin and select a bright scene. Daylight and automatic exposure can make subtle mood lighting appear completely off.
- Remove control conflicts. Search every connected controller profile for cabin, light and lighting-potentiometer assignments. A duplicate switch or axis can continually write an off value after the mouse control is moved.
- Reload the aircraft cleanly. Return to the main menu and reload the PMDG 777 rather than repeatedly changing panel states in the same session. This resets custom lighting variables that may have become stuck.

Why do the cockpit lights work but the cabin does not?
Working cockpit lights prove only that the relevant flight-deck lighting bus has power; they do not confirm cabin utility power or a selected cabin scene.

If the avionics are also unpowered, work through the broader electrical, dimmer and controller checks for blank displays before treating this as a cabin-specific fault.
Can MSFS 2024 or a livery break the cabin lighting?
Yes. An incorrect simulator package, an outdated PMDG build, or a livery that replaces cabin or emissive textures can leave the controls working while the cabin remains visually dark.
- Confirm that the installed 777 package supports the simulator being used. Do not assume a package copied manually from MSFS 2020 is a clean MSFS 2024 installation; check our PMDG compatibility guidance for MSFS 2024.
- Update the aircraft through its supported installer or update utility, then restart Microsoft Flight Simulator.
- Test a stock PMDG livery. On PC, temporarily remove cabin-lighting mods, texture replacements and third-party liveries from the
Communityfolder while leaving the required PMDG aircraft package installed. - Repair or reinstall the PMDG package only if the lights still fail with stable generator power, CABIN/UTILITY on, the native cabin control selected and add-on conflicts removed.
If the stock aircraft works after those packages are removed, restore them one at a time. The package added immediately before the fault returns is the conflict.
