Why can't I click cockpit controls in MSFS 2024?

Fix MSFS 2024 cockpit controls that will not click by restoring cursor focus, changing interaction mode, resetting bindings and testing aircraft.
Ian Stephens

In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, cockpit controls usually stop accepting clicks because the mouse is still in freelook, the wrong cockpit interaction mode or input profile is active, a controller binding has taken focus, or the aircraft is unpowered. Restore cursor control, test a default mouse profile, then check the aircraft and add-ons.

How do I restore clickable cockpit controls?

  1. Exit camera or freelook mode. Release the right mouse button, stop any mouse-look command and return to the normal cockpit view. If moving the mouse turns your head instead of showing a pointer, follow our fixes for mouse-look and cockpit camera conflicts.
  2. Return focus to the simulator. Close the toolbar, Electronic Flight Bag, ATC window or any other overlay, then click once in an empty part of the cockpit before trying a switch. After using another monitor or alt-tabbing on PC, the first click may only restore window focus.
  3. Test the other cockpit interaction style. Search the accessibility or assistance settings for the cockpit interaction system. Try Legacy if you want direct clicking, dragging and mouse-wheel adjustment; try Lock if you prefer highlighted controls and assigned interaction actions. A changed assistance preset can switch this behaviour unexpectedly.
  4. Load the default mouse profile. Open the control settings, select the mouse and create or select an untouched default profile. Search by input to see whether the left or right mouse button has also been assigned to camera movement or another command.
  5. Remove competing inputs temporarily. Disconnect extra controllers, button boxes or remapping software and test with only the mouse and keyboard. Duplicate bindings or a noisy device can continuously take control focus; our guide to phantom inputs and duplicate assignments covers that fault in detail.
  6. Test a powered default aircraft. Start a flight on the runway rather than at a parking stand. If its switches work, the original aircraft was probably unpowered, incorrectly operated or affected by an aircraft-specific problem.
  7. Restart the flight and simulator. If no cockpit responds after the checks above, restart MSFS 2024 and reconnect the mouse or controller. This clears input focus that has become stuck without deleting working profiles.

A mistake we see constantly is clearing every binding before identifying which device is at fault. Preserve the existing profile, make a temporary test profile and change one variable at a time.

What does the exact symptom mean?

Controls highlight but do not moveWrong action for Lock mode, a guarded switch or unsupported controlFollow the displayed interaction hint and check for a switch guard

Why do only some switches or knobs not work?

If most of the cockpit works, the mouse configuration is probably not the problem. A cold-and-dark aircraft may require battery or external power before displays and avionics controls respond, while guarded switches must be uncovered before they can move.

Rotary knobs can also have separate inner, outer, push and pull click areas. Move the pointer slightly until the correct interaction hint appears, then use the method expected by the selected interaction style. For failures confined to navigation displays, use our checks for unresponsive G1000 and FMS controls.

Some switches, circuit breakers and panels are decorative or only partly simulated. If a control never highlights but neighbouring controls do, consult the aircraft's built-in documentation before treating it as an input fault.

How can I tell whether an add-on aircraft is causing it?

An aircraft or package is the likely cause when default MSFS 2024 aircraft remain clickable with the same mouse profile. Test a default aircraft from a runway start, then repeat the test in the affected aircraft without changing any controls.

  • On PC, temporarily disable packages in the Community folder, especially cockpit, avionics, camera and aircraft modifications.
  • If MSFS offers Safe Mode after an abnormal shutdown, use it for a clean comparison.
  • Update or reinstall only the affected aircraft after confirming the fault is isolated to it.
  • Do not delete the entire control profile merely because one aircraft uses unusual clickspots or custom systems.

What should console users check?

On Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5, confirm that the controller is in cockpit cursor mode rather than camera mode and that another connected device is not taking focus. If a physical mouse is attached, test both the mouse and the controller cursor separately.

Xbox has additional focus and interaction-mode pitfalls, including rotary knobs that appear selectable but will not turn. Our dedicated guide explains how to restore cockpit mouse controls on Xbox without unnecessarily resetting every controller assignment.
