Which has better graphics and scenery?

Microsoft Flight Simulator has the stronger default world and usually wins for VFR sightseeing. Its aerial imagery, terrain data, atmospheric rendering and photogrammetry produce recognisable places without requiring the user to assemble a global scenery installation.

Prepar3D's default world is more conventional and can appear sparse by comparison. It can look excellent with selected terrain, airports, weather enhancements and aircraft, but that is a curated system rather than the out-of-box experience. The added cost, storage and compatibility work belong in any fair comparison.

MSFS is not visually perfect: streamed scenery can show data gaps, distorted structures or inconsistent photogrammetry. Which has more realistic flight dynamics?

Neither simulator is more realistic across every aircraft and every type of flying. The base flight model matters, but so do the aircraft developer's aerodynamic data, engine modelling, avionics, autopilot logic, failures and control calibration.

  • Visual reference flying: MSFS usually provides the more convincing default environment.
  • Aircraft systems: the individual aircraft package decides the result; a detailed P3D aircraft can outperform a basic MSFS one, and the reverse is equally possible.
  • Handling: judge the exact aircraft, loading condition and control setup rather than the simulator logo.
  • Structured training: Prepar3D can be preferable where repeatable scenarios, specialist integrations and a controlled software configuration are required.

A mistake we see constantly is treating better ground imagery as proof of better flight dynamics, or Prepar3D's professional positioning as proof that every included aircraft is study-level. Neither assumption holds. A home computer running Prepar3D also does not become an approved training device merely because of the software; approval concerns the complete configured system and its intended use.

Performance, internet and hardware

Neither simulator is consistently lighter on hardware. Prepar3D can be heavily affected by dense AI traffic, shadows, reflections, autogen and complex add-on airports. In MSFS, settings such as Terrain Level of Detail, render scaling, traffic, glass-cockpit displays and streamed scenery can dominate performance.

Do not compare an empty default Prepar3D airport with a busy, highly detailed MSFS hub and call the result a platform benchmark. Test the aircraft, airport, weather and traffic combination you actually intend to use. Consistent frame time during an instrument approach matters more than a high frame rate over an empty runway.

MSFS needs a stable connection to deliver its best world detail, although offline operation is possible with reduced scenery. Prepar3D suits users who want scenery and aircraft kept locally in a fixed configuration, but a large P3D installation can consume substantial storage and maintenance time.

Can Prepar3D add-ons be used in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

No, Prepar3D add-ons cannot be installed directly into MSFS. Aircraft formats, gauges, compiled modules, effects, scenery systems and installers differ. Copying an old aircraft folder into MSFS is not a valid migration method.

Compatibility is not guaranteed even between major Prepar3D releases. An airport may appear to load while its objects, lighting or elevation data fail; compiled gauges and DLL modules are still more sensitive. Confirm explicit support for the exact simulator version before buying or installing anything. Apply the same rule when moving between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024.

Common comparison mistakes

  1. Buying the simulator before choosing the aircraft. If one specialist aircraft or training integration is essential, establish which simulator versions it supports first.
  2. Counting old add-ons as automatically compatible. Check the installer, compiled modules and published major-version support. Partial loading is not proof of compatibility.
  3. Comparing only screenshots or base prices. Include the scenery, aircraft, storage, internet connection and controls needed to create the experience you expect.
  4. Ignoring licensing and deployment. Prepar3D users must select a licence appropriate to their use, while console MSFS users face tighter restrictions on external files and peripherals.

Which simulator should you use?

Most new home users should choose Microsoft Flight Simulator; users with a defined training, integration or legacy add-on requirement should consider Prepar3D. The required aircraft and workflow should make the final decision.

Choose Prepar3D when

  • A required aircraft, instructor tool or specialist integration explicitly supports your chosen P3D version.
  • You need repeatable scenarios and a locally controlled scenery environment.
  • You already own a substantial collection of add-ons confirmed to work with that version.
  • You are prepared to maintain the add-on stack and have checked that your intended use fits the licence terms.

Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator when

  • You want detailed worldwide scenery without building it from numerous separate packages.
  • Your main interests are home simulation, VFR exploration or broad access to aircraft and locations.
  • You need Xbox or PlayStation support rather than a Windows-only simulator.
  • No required training package or specialist aircraft ties you to Prepar3D.

If choosing MSFS, treat its editions separately. MSFS 2020 remains a PC and Xbox product and was never released on PlayStation; MSFS 2024 also supports PS5 and PS5 Pro. Confirm aircraft, peripheral and add-on compatibility for the exact edition and platform rather than assuming that anything labelled “MSFS” will work everywhere.
