How do I enable realistic distant haze in FSX?

Enable realistic distant haze in FSX with the right visibility layers, cloud draw distance and horizon fixes—without creating a grey wall.

FSX has no separate “distant haze” switch. Create it with user-defined weather by setting finite surface visibility, usually 15–30 statute miles for ordinary haze, and a higher-visibility layer aloft. Terrain will fade into the atmosphere instead of meeting an unnaturally sharp horizon.

How to set distant haze in FSX

Use a finite low-level visibility layer in the FSX weather editor. The method is the same in boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition.

  1. Select custom weather. Open World > Weather, choose user-defined weather and enter the custom or advanced weather editor.
  2. Open the visibility controls. Add or edit a visibility layer with its base at the surface. Unlimited visibility produces the excessively crisp horizon most users are trying to remove.
  3. Set the distance. Begin around 15–30 statute miles for ordinary humid conditions. Use 5–12 miles for murky weather or 40–60 miles for a genuinely clear, dry day.
  4. Shape the layer vertically. For low-level haze, place the top roughly between 6,000 and 10,000 feet and use longer visibility above it. Avoid changing abruptly from short visibility to unlimited, which can create a horizontal band.
  5. Apply it consistently. Select all weather stations when that option is available, or edit stations along the route. Otherwise, FSX may interpolate between different visibility values and make the haze change suddenly in flight.
  6. Check cloud draw distance. In the display settings’ Weather section, keep cloud draw distance beyond the useful visibility range. This does not generate haze, but it prevents the cloud deck from ending before the faded horizon.
  7. Save the flight. Saving the flight preserves a static user-defined setup. Loading another weather theme can replace it.

There is little benefit in maximising cloud draw distance when dense haze already hides the distance. Use the lowest setting that keeps visible clouds from popping out; that saves rendering work without altering the haze itself.

What FSX visibility setting looks realistic?

No single value is realistic in every climate. These are practical starting points rather than fixed meteorological rules:

Use the reported visibility when recreating a particular flight. Where a METAR format reports 10SM as its upper limit, that means at least ten miles, not necessarily exactly ten; setting FSX to ten can make the scene much murkier than intended. Why does FSX still show a hard horizon line?

A hard horizon usually means the visibility profile is too extreme or another weather source has replaced it. FSX cannot reproduce modern atmospheric scattering perfectly, but the most distracting boundary can normally be reduced.

  • Grey or white wall: increase surface visibility and make the transition to the upper layer less abrupt.
  • Sharp terrain against the sky: confirm that visibility is finite rather than unlimited.
  • Horizontal band above the aircraft: raise the haze-layer top or reduce the difference between the lower and upper visibility values.
  • Sudden change along the route: apply compatible visibility to neighbouring weather stations.
  • Clouds disappear before the terrain: increase cloud draw distance rather than lowering visibility further.

Default horizon textures can also expose a colour seam even when the weather is correct. Installing smoother daylight horizon textures for FSX can improve the sky-to-horizon blend, but texture replacements do not create weather-based haze by themselves.

Do I need an add-on or FSX.cfg edit?

No add-on or configuration-file edit is required for realistic distant haze in FSX. Visibility belongs in the weather system; increasing LOD_RADIUS only extends detailed terrain and may hurt performance without adding any atmospheric fade.

Post-processing should come after the weather is correct. Restrained colour and contrast adjustments can improve atmospheric depth, while heavy sharpening or contrast makes the horizon boundary more obvious. Why does the haze disappear after changing weather?

The haze disappears because weather themes, dynamic updates or an external weather engine can overwrite FSX’s visibility layers. Reapply the user-defined weather after loading a theme, or configure visibility inside the weather engine if it controls the active conditions. A saved flight retains a static setup, but it will not prevent a later weather load from replacing it.
