Constant turbulence in FSX and FSX: Steam Edition usually comes from active weather turbulence or thermals, rapidly changing injected winds, or a controller axis moving without input. Reduce it by disabling turbulence and thermal effects for a test, selecting static fair weather, slowing weather changes, and checking joystick calibration and duplicate assignments.
What causes constant turbulence in FSX?
FSX creates aircraft movement from turbulence assigned to weather layers, thermal activity, gusts and changes in wind direction or speed. The effect is especially conspicuous in light aircraft, but abrupt weather updates can throw larger aircraft around as well.
An external weather engine can make the problem worse if it injects substantially different conditions at each update. Running two weather sources together is another common mistake: each source tries to replace the same wind and cloud layers.

How do I reduce turbulence in FSX?
- Establish a clean baseline: start a Free Flight with a default aircraft, static fair weather and normal simulation speed. Close any external weather engine. Do not use a mission for this test because missions can load scripted conditions.
- Disable the physical effects temporarily: open FSX's weather-related display settings and select Disable turbulence and thermal effects. The precise route into the settings screen can differ slightly between the boxed and Steam interfaces, but both editions provide this option. If the aircraft becomes stable, weather was the cause.
- Edit every weather layer: if you want some movement rather than completely calm air, return to custom weather and set turbulence to none or light. Remove strong gusts and inspect both surface and upper-air wind layers; a turbulent winds-aloft layer can become apparent only during the climb.
- Slow weather transitions: use a low weather-change rate and avoid frequent, abrupt updates. Allow one weather source to control FSX. The simulator's legacy real-world weather downloader is not a suitable clean baseline, so use a static theme when diagnosing the problem.
- Test the controls: increase the null zone slightly for an axis that will not centre, recalibrate the device and remove duplicate pitch, roll or rudder assignments. - Restore one feature at a time: re-enable thermals, dynamic weather or a weather add-on separately. This identifies the actual source instead of hiding it beneath several simultaneous changes.
We recommend using the supported weather controls before copying FSX.cfg tweaks from old forum posts. Configuration edits can be overwritten, may not affect turbulence generated independently by an add-on, and cannot correct a drifting controller axis.
Why does the aircraft still shake in fair weather?
If static fair weather plus disabled turbulence does not stop the motion, the cause is probably not weather. Park the aircraft, centre every controller and watch the virtual yoke or external control surfaces. Movement without input points to axis noise, an inadequate null zone or another connected device sending commands.

Can I keep realistic light turbulence?
You can retain believable bumps without accepting continuous violent movement. Leave the global disable option off, then use light turbulence, moderate gusts and gradual weather transitions.
- Run only one source of weather injection.
- Avoid severe turbulence layers unless the intended conditions justify them.
- Use normal simulation speed while weather is updating.
- Check aircraft weight, balance, trim and airspeed before blaming the weather engine.
- Expect a light general-aviation aircraft to react more sharply than a heavy airliner.
A stable default-aircraft test proves that FSX itself and the basic flight model are functioning. From there, add weather complexity gradually until the movement feels convincing without becoming constant.
