Why does my rudder keep drifting left in FS2004?

A rudder that keeps drifting left in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 usually has an off-centre or duplicated joystick/pedal axis, too little null zone, or stuck keyboard rudder input. Recalibrate the controller in Windows, remove duplicate rudder assignments in FS2004, increase the null zone slightly, then centre the rudder with the keyboard command.

Is the rudder drifting, or is the aircraft yawing left?

Watch the rudder surface in an external view to separate a control fault from normal aircraft behaviour. If the surface moves left while your controls are untouched, investigate the controller assignments; if it remains centred while the nose turns left, wind or propeller effects are more likely.

A single-engine propeller aircraft can legitimately yaw left at high power and low airspeed because FS2004 models effects such as P-factor and spiralling slipstream. That requires right rudder; it does not mean the rudder axis itself is drifting.

How do I stop FS2004 rudder drift?

Use the following checks in order, because each one identifies a different source rather than merely hiding the movement.

  1. Establish a clean test. Load a default aircraft in calm weather, switch off the autopilot and yaw damper, and leave the engine at idle or shut down. Release the joystick and pedals, then observe the rudder in an external view. Movement under these conditions is an input problem, not propeller yaw.
  2. Centre the keyboard controls. Press the centre-controls command, normally numeric keypad 5 with the default FS2004 layout. Keyboard rudder commands can leave a control displaced rather than returning it like a physical pedal. Compact keyboards and customised layouts may differ, so use our default-key reference for FS2004 to verify the assigned commands.
  3. Inspect the raw Windows input. Exit FS2004, open Windows Game Controllers by running joy.cpl, select the device and view its properties. With your hands and feet off the controls, the rudder axis should remain close to centre without flickering.   5. Add only enough null zone. Increase the rudder null zone until minor centre noise no longer moves the surface. Do not use an excessively large null zone to conceal a badly miscalibrated or worn potentiometer, because that removes useful control around the centre and makes take-offs harder.
  6. Check auto-rudder and rudder trim. With auto-rudder enabled, an off-centre aileron axis can produce an apparent rudder fault. Disable the aid temporarily and centre any rudder trim fitted or modelled by the aircraft. Complex add-ons may also command yaw through their own systems, so diagnose them with those systems disengaged.

Why does the aircraft pull left only while taxiing?

A ground-only pull usually comes from differential braking rather than the rudder. An uncalibrated or reversed left toe-brake axis can apply partial braking with both feet released, while the rudder itself remains correctly centred.

What if the rudder still moves left with the controller disconnected?

If the drift remains after FS2004 is restarted with all controllers disconnected, the source is probably a keyboard command, auto-rudder, rudder trim, a saved flight or an aircraft-specific add-on.

  • Check that the Rudder left key is not stuck or assigned to another button.
  • Disable auto-rudder and confirm that the ailerons are centred.
  • Start a new flight instead of loading the saved flight where the fault appeared.
  • Test a default FS2004 aircraft. If only one add-on aircraft is affected, investigate its trim, panel gauges or control logic rather than changing global calibration.
  • Temporarily disable joystick input in FS2004. If the movement stops, an attached device or assignment is still supplying the command.

Do not edit the aircraft configuration or reinstall FS2004 before making the default-aircraft comparison. Most persistent rudder drift is resolved by calibration, deleting a second axis assignment or applying a small null zone.
