What Saab 340 add-ons work in Microsoft Flight Simulator? Compare the native payware aircraft, freeware liveries, FSX files and MSFS 2024 support.
For Microsoft Flight Simulator, the principal native, flyable Saab 340 is NextGen Simulations’ payware Saab 340B. Other modern-MSFS add-ons are mainly liveries for that base aircraft. Most free Saab 340 packages found in download libraries were built for FSX or Prepar3D and will not work natively in MSFS 2020 or 2024.
Which Saab 340 add-ons can you actually fly?
The NextGen Simulations Saab 340B is the established complete aircraft package for modern MSFS.
| Type | Available option | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Complete aircraft | NextGen Simulations Saab 340B | Payware aircraft developed for modern MSFS; confirm the supported simulator edition and platform on its product listing. |
| Liveries | Airline and fictional repaints for the NextGen model | These require the payware base aircraft and must match that specific developer’s model. |
| Legacy aircraft | Complete Saab 340 packages for FSX and Prepar3D | Useful only in their named simulator; they are not Community-folder aircraft for modern MSFS. |
Choose the NextGen aircraft if the priority is flying a Saab 340B in MSFS rather than merely adding a repaint. Before buying, compare its documented systems with what matters to you: engine and propeller management, electrical and bleed-air systems, pressurisation, autopilot behaviour, navigation equipment and performance. Payware does not automatically mean every circuit breaker, failure mode or operating limitation is simulated.
Is there a free Saab 340 for Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Free Saab 340 content for modern MSFS is mainly repaints, not a self-contained aircraft of comparable scope.
A livery contains textures and configuration entries; it does not contain the cockpit, flight model or systems. It may therefore appear broken or fail to appear at all when the required NextGen base aircraft is missing. Repaints made for another Saab model, developer or simulator are not interchangeable.
Our MSFS aircraft and livery download catalogue separates modern packages from older simulator files. Always read the stated dependency and supported simulator before downloading.
Do FSX Saab 340 downloads work in MSFS?
No, an FSX Saab 340 cannot be copied into the MSFS Community folder and used as a native aircraft.
For example, our complete freeware Saab 340B package for FSX uses the legacy model, panel, gauge and aircraft-configuration formats expected by FSX. Modern Microsoft Flight Simulator uses a different package structure, cockpit system and rendering pipeline.
A direct copy normally produces no aircraft entry, a model without a working virtual cockpit, missing gauges or unusable flight dynamics. Converting one properly is an aircraft-development project, not an installation shortcut. Use the legacy package in FSX, or obtain a Saab 340 built specifically for MSFS.
Will a Saab 340 add-on work in MSFS 2024 and on console?
A Saab 340 add-on works only where its listing explicitly supports that simulator generation and platform.
- MSFS 2020 on PC: use the installer or manual package supplied for that edition. Liveries and other manual downloads normally go into the
Communityfolder. - MSFS 2024 on PC: do not assume every MSFS 2020 aircraft is fully compatible. Confirm explicit MSFS 2024 support, especially for cockpit systems, controls and avionics.
- Xbox Series X|S: external PC files cannot be installed. The aircraft must be offered through the in-simulator Marketplace for Xbox.
- PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro: only MSFS 2024 is available, and add-ons must be distributed for PlayStation through the in-simulator Marketplace. MSFS 2020 was never released on PlayStation.
A product being available on PC does not guarantee an Xbox or PlayStation release. Marketplace availability, certification and compatibility can differ between platforms.
Common Saab 340 installation failures
Most Saab 340 installation problems come from a missing base aircraft, an incorrectly extracted package or incompatible liveries.
- Install the base aircraft first. Launch it once without extra repaints so that any fault can be separated from a livery problem.
- Extract manual downloads correctly. On PC, avoid leaving the actual package one folder too deep inside
Community. Our Community-folder aircraft installation walkthrough covers the correct package structure. - Remove duplicate versions. An older copy of the same aircraft or livery can conflict with an updated package.
- Check turboprop control bindings. Unexpected shutdowns or engines that refuse to start can come from duplicate condition-lever, mixture or fuel-cut-off assignments on throttles and other controllers.
