How do I set a throttle cut control in MSFS 2024?

Ian Stephens
In short

Set a throttle cut control in MSFS 2024, understand what it does, and fix a binding overridden by a joystick or throttle axis.

To set a throttle cut control in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, open Settings > Controls, select the keyboard, controller or throttle you want to edit, search for Throttle Cut, assign a key or button, then save the profile. The command immediately moves the assigned throttle to minimum; it does not shut down the engine.

How do I bind Throttle Cut in MSFS 2024?

Bind the command on the exact device and control profile you will use for flying.

  1. Open Controls: From the main or pause menu, open Settings and then Controls.
  2. Select the device: Choose your keyboard, Xbox or PlayStation controller, joystick, or throttle quadrant. A command assigned under one device will not automatically appear on another.
  3. Choose a profile: Use the active custom profile, or copy the default preset if MSFS will not let you edit it directly.
  4. Find the command: Set the control filter to show all commands and search for Throttle Cut. Searching only assigned controls can hide it.
  5. Assign an input: Select the command, press the required key or button, and confirm the assignment. Review any conflict warning rather than clearing unrelated bindings automatically.
  6. Save and test: Apply the profile, load an aircraft with its engine running, add a little power and press the new control. The cockpit throttle should move to its minimum position.

F1 is the usual default keyboard command for minimum or cut throttle. Our reference to the default keyboard throttle shortcuts also covers the increase, decrease and full-throttle keys. For axes and controller triggers, use our throttle input and profile setup rather than assigning only the cut command.

What does Throttle Cut actually do?

Throttle Cut commands minimum throttle; it is not an engine or fuel cut-off. The word “cut” can be misleading because the engine will normally continue running at idle.

ControlResultBest use
Throttle CutImmediately commands minimum throttleA quick return to idle
Decrease ThrottleReduces power in steps while held or pressedKeyboard power adjustments
Throttle AxisProvides continuous power controlNormal flying with a joystick or quadrant
Reverse-thrust commandSelects or controls reverse on supported aircraftDeceleration after landing

To stop an engine, use the aircraft’s proper fuel control: mixture idle cut-off in an appropriate piston aircraft, the condition or fuel lever in a turboprop, or the engine master or fuel control in a jet. Reverse is also separate; see how to bind reverse thrust without confusing it with idle.

Why does the throttle cut binding not work?

If the command appears to do nothing or the lever springs back, another input or profile is usually taking priority.

  • The wrong device was selected: Check that the assignment is under the controller or keyboard you are actually using.
  • A different profile is active: Aircraft can load with another device profile. Confirm the profile shown after entering the cockpit.
  • The command was hidden: Change the filter from assigned controls to all controls, then search again using both throttle and cut.
  • The button has a conflict: Remove another throttle, reverse or cockpit command from the same input if both actions fire together.
  • The aircraft uses custom power logic: Some complex aircraft do not respond normally to generic simulator commands. Try the virtual cockpit lever or an aircraft-specific profile.

Why does the throttle move back after pressing the button?

An assigned analogue axis can overwrite the cut command as soon as that axis sends another value. Move the physical lever fully to idle before pressing the button; if the axis jitters or cannot reach its endpoint, follow our steps for calibrating the joystick or throttle axis and add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted input.

Can Throttle Cut control only one engine?

The standard Throttle Cut binding is intended to command the throttle group, not perform an individual engine shutdown. If MSFS exposes engine-numbered cut commands for the selected aircraft and profile, assign the required engine command; otherwise move that engine’s cockpit throttle or hardware axis separately.

For an actual asymmetric engine shutdown, use the correct engine’s fuel, mixture or condition control. Pulling one throttle to idle reduces thrust but leaves that engine running.

Should I use a button or throttle axis?

Use a button for an instant idle command, but keep an axis for normal power control. A keyboard user can retain F1; a controller or HOTAS user should choose an accessible button that is not also assigned to reverse, mixture, braking or an aircraft interaction command.

A common mistake we see is binding Throttle Cut and reverse thrust to the same button. That can make the aircraft enter reverse when the pilot only intended to return to idle, so separate inputs are safer unless the aircraft and hardware are deliberately configured around a combined detent.
