Command wording can differ slightly between control presets, aircraft and interface language. Search for cyclic, collective, tail rotor and helicopter throttle, then choose the command containing Axis rather than separate increase, decrease, left or right commands.

Native helicopters generally use the dedicated helicopter axes. Some add-on aircraft may instead respond to generic aileron, elevator, rudder or throttle inputs. If one aircraft ignores a dedicated axis, test the corresponding generic axis individually rather than leaving both assignments active.

How do I configure the controls step by step?

  1. Connect and calibrate the hardware. Centre the joystick and pedals, move every axis through its full range and correct any hardware calibration problem before opening the simulator. On Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5, the controller must also be compatible with that console.
  2. Create a helicopter profile. Open the MSFS 2024 control settings, select each connected device and duplicate its working profile. Give the copies clear names such as HELI STICK, HELI THROTTLE and HELI PEDALS so fixed-wing mappings remain untouched.
  3. Show all available commands. Change the command filter from assigned controls to all controls. A mistake we see constantly is searching while the interface is showing assigned commands only, which makes unbound helicopter axes appear to be missing.
  4. Bind the cyclic. Assign joystick left/right to the lateral cyclic axis and forward/aft to the longitudinal cyclic axis. Watch the input indicator and confirm that movement is smooth across the whole range.
  5. Bind collective and anti-torque. Move the intended lever when assigning collective, then bind pedals or twist grip to the tail-rotor axis. Reverse collective if pulling the lever towards you lowers it in the cockpit; hardware lever orientation varies.
  6. Add throttle and trim only where needed. Bind helicopter throttle if the aircraft requires manual rotor RPM control. Assign trim or force-trim controls if the helicopter supports them, but do not assume every model implements the same trim system.
  7. Remove duplicate inputs. Check the keyboard, gamepad, joystick, throttle and pedals for second assignments to cyclic, collective or tail rotor. A centred gamepad can still introduce drift if one of its axes is noisy.
  8. Review helicopter assistance. With full analogue controls, disable assisted cyclic, collective and tail-rotor functions that fight your inputs. For a gamepad or hardware without pedals, keeping selected helicopter assists enabled can make the control scheme practical.

Why is the collective reversed or the helicopter spinning?

  • Collective moves backwards: enable the reverse-axis option for that assignment. Do not compensate by setting an extreme sensitivity curve.
  • Collective jumps between positions: remove digital collective increase/decrease bindings or a second analogue assignment. Check the lever for electrical noise as well.
  • The helicopter spins on lift-off: verify that the tail-rotor axis centres correctly, remove duplicate rudder bindings and check whether an assisted tail-rotor setting is also applying yaw.
  • Cyclic does nothing: confirm that an axis command was selected and that the command filter is not hiding the binding. If the problem affects only one add-on helicopter, test its expected generic aileron and elevator axes.
  • Rotor RPM falls when collective is raised: check the aircraft's governor or throttle state. This is a power-management issue, not a reason to map collective to both the collective and throttle axes.

What sensitivity settings work best for helicopters?

Start with collective close to linear and soften the cyclic only enough to make small corrections controllable. Use the smallest dead zone that stops physical drift; a large cyclic dead zone causes nothing to happen near centre, followed by an abrupt response.

  • Cyclic: reduce response around the centre if hovering feels twitchy, while retaining full travel at the ends.
  • Tail rotor: add a modest centre curve if pedal or twist inputs are too abrupt. Excessive dead zone makes precise yaw control harder.
  • Collective: keep the response broadly linear unless the physical lever has unusually short travel.
  • Reactivity: lower it only if the input arrives too sharply; do not use it to conceal a noisy or duplicated axis.

Can I fly MSFS 2024 helicopters without pedals or a collective?

Yes. A joystick with a twist grip and separate throttle lever provides cyclic, anti-torque and collective control from one compact setup. Pedals improve precise yaw control, while a dedicated collective gives longer, more natural lever travel, but neither is mandatory.

A gamepad can also work: use the main stick for cyclic, retain a comfortable yaw arrangement, and assign collective to an available analogue input or button pair. Because a gamepad has limited independent analogue axes, tail-rotor or collective assistance may be preferable to forcing several functions onto the same control.
