Do not stack several generations of Saitek and Logitech software for the same device. If an existing driver works and Windows detects every input correctly, adding another package can create conflicts rather than improve the setup.

Buttons should illuminate once per press, and centred axes should remain steady. If the raw input is wrong here, fix the driver, connection or Windows calibration before opening Prepar3D.   3. Open Prepar3D’s Controls settings. Make sure controllers are enabled, then select each Saitek device from the controller list. A device may be connected correctly even when another controller is initially displayed in the list.
  4. Clear unwanted automatic assignments. Prepar3D may assign pitch, roll, throttle or rudder to several devices at once. Inspect every controller and remove duplicates before adding your preferred mappings.
  5. Assign axis commands rather than button commands. A moving lever must use the corresponding axis assignment, not commands such as throttle increase and decrease. Move the physical control when prompted and verify that Prepar3D detects the intended axis.
  6. Set the response and direction. Begin with the full usable axis range, a linear response and the smallest null zone that prevents jitter. Reverse an axis only when its movement is visibly backward; toe-brake axes commonly require this.
  7. Assign buttons deliberately. Map trim, brakes, flaps, gear, views and autopilot functions only after the axes work. Which Prepar3D axes should I assign?

Assign each physical control to one matching simulation axis, using generic engine controls for broad aircraft compatibility or individual engine axes for a dedicated multi-engine layout.

Choose the generic throttle, propeller and mixture axes when one quadrant will be used across many single-engine aircraft. Choose engine-specific throttle axes when separate levers are intended to control separate engines.

Why do Saitek controls move twice or work backwards?

Double movement nearly always comes from duplicate bindings, while backward movement is usually an axis-direction setting rather than a hardware fault.

  • Aircraft controls jump or resist input: inspect every connected device for a second aileron, elevator, rudder or throttle assignment. Twist grips and small throttle sliders are frequent sources.
  • Toe brakes remain applied: reverse each brake axis and recalibrate it. Confirm in the cockpit that brake pressure disappears when the pedals are released.
  • A lever moves only part-way: verify its full range in joy.cpl, then check the Prepar3D response and calibration settings.
  • Buttons trigger two actions: remove either the Prepar3D binding or the keyboard command programmed through Saitek software.
  • Settings change after reconnecting: return the controller to its original USB port and avoid moving devices between ports after configuration.
  • Inputs disconnect during a flight: test another USB port or a powered hub and check whether Windows is suspending the USB hub to save power.

Why do Saitek panels not appear under Controls?

Saitek Radio, Multi, Switch and Instrument Panels are not conventional joystick-axis devices, so they generally rely on dedicated panel software rather than Prepar3D’s normal assignment screen.

Use a panel package that explicitly supports Prepar3D v5 and its 64-bit architecture; an old FSX-only plug-in may install yet leave the panel blank.
