- A capable dedicated GPU: VR demands considerably more graphics performance and VRAM than monitor use.

On macOS or Linux, a missing or unusable VR option reflects the platform limitation rather than a setting that needs enabling. On Windows, check the connection and runtime before changing X-Plane graphics options.
- Confirm the operating system: run the native Windows edition, not the macOS or Linux build through a virtual machine or compatibility layer.
- Connect the headset first: verify that tracking and the PC connection work in the headset manufacturer's Windows software.
- Start the required runtime: X-Plane cannot enter VR if Windows has not detected an active headset.
- Check GPU routing: on a laptop, both X-Plane and the headset connection must use the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Test without third-party plugins: if VR crashes during loading, temporarily remove non-essential plugins and test the unmodified simulator before reinstalling them individually.
Can macOS or Linux users force X-Plane 12 into VR?
There is no supported way to add VR to the native macOS or Linux editions. Virtual machines, compatibility layers and experimental runtime bridges can introduce failures in headset detection, graphics acceleration, controller input and performance, so we would not build a VR system around them.
Booting and running Windows natively may provide the supported software route on compatible hardware, but the computer must still satisfy the headset's drivers, connection requirements and GPU demands. Streaming the display to another device also does not turn a Mac or Linux host into a supported X-Plane 12 VR system; the simulator must be running on the Windows VR PC.
