How do I load cargo correctly in MSFS 2020?

Cargo affects the flight model only when its mass is entered into active payload stations or an add-on’s linked load manager. Visible pallets, containers and cargo liveries are cosmetic unless the aircraft specifically connects them to its payload system.

  1. Define the shipment. Choose a cargo mass and confirm whether the interface is displaying kg or lb. A unit mismatch can make a plausible load dangerously heavy or unrealistically light.
  2. Select one loading method. For a basic aircraft, use the simulator’s Weight and Balance or Fuel panel. For a complex add-on, follow its electronic flight bag or payload manager and use its option to apply or synchronise the load if provided. Do not load the same freight in both systems unless the aircraft documentation explicitly requires it.
  3. Distribute the load. Split the freight between forward and aft cargo stations while watching the centre-of-gravity indication. Loading everything into one compartment can put the aircraft outside its approved CG envelope even when total weight is legal.
  4. Add route fuel separately. Load enough for the planned flight, contingencies and reserve rather than filling every tank automatically. If the aircraft is overweight, reduce cargo or fuel according to the operation instead of ignoring the warning.

The simulator calculates CG from the payload stations defined by the aircraft developer. A poorly configured model may have simplified or inaccurate stations, while a passenger aircraft may offer only seats and baggage compartments. Those can approximate belly freight, but they do not create a true freighter conversion.

How can I simulate cargo loading and unloading?

A convincing turnaround starts from a parking position and uses only the services that the selected aircraft and airport support.

  1. Begin on a ramp or cargo stand. Starting on the runway skips the loading phase and may leave no room for service vehicles.
  2. Secure the aircraft. Set the parking brake, shut down as appropriate and connect ground power if the model provides it.
  3. Open the correct cargo doors. Door controls may be in the cockpit, an aircraft tablet or a custom menu. The standard toolbar cannot animate a door that the aircraft developer did not model.
  4. Request available services. Ground vehicles depend on the airport parking spot and aircraft configuration. If a loader does not appear or align, try a suitable cargo stand; some aircraft-airport combinations simply lack compatible visual equipment.
  5. Apply the load. Enter the freight through the same payload system chosen before departure. After arrival, reduce those stations to represent unloading.

An open cargo door or attached loader does not prove that weight has been added. Check the displayed aircraft weight and CG before starting engines.

What makes an MSFS cargo flight realistic?

A realistic freight flight needs a basic load sheet, valid performance data and a plausible operating constraint.

  • Record the origin, destination, cargo mass, fuel, zero-fuel weight, take-off weight and estimated landing weight.
