Quest Kodiak cold-and-dark start procedure

The Kodiak uses a PT6 turboprop start: the compressor must be turning before fuel is introduced. Exact switch behaviour can vary slightly between aircraft builds, so the checklist supplied with your Kodiak takes precedence over generic limits.

  1. Secure the aircraft. Set the parking brake. Place the power lever at idle, the propeller lever fully forward and the condition lever at cut-off. Confirm that the emergency power lever is in its normal position.
  2. Open the fuel supply. Turn both fuel selectors on and place the fuel shut-off control fully open. A closed selector or shut-off valve is one of the most common reasons the engine spins without starting.
  3. Apply electrical power. Switch the battery on and turn on the beacon. Leave the generator and avionics masters off to reduce the electrical load during cranking.
  4. Prime the fuel system. Switch on the auxiliary or boost fuel pump and confirm that fuel is available. Do not move the condition lever out of cut-off yet.
  5. Engage the starter. Verify that Ng—the gas-generator speed—begins increasing. If Ng remains at zero, release the starter and investigate rather than introducing fuel.
  6. Introduce fuel at the correct Ng. Once Ng reaches the checklist's fuel-introduction point, commonly around 12–14%, move the condition lever to low idle. ITT should rise promptly as the engine lights.
  7. Monitor the start. Watch ITT, Ng and oil pressure. If ITT approaches or exceeds its marked limit, return the condition lever to cut-off immediately and continue motoring only as permitted by the aircraft checklist.
  8. Release the starter. Once the engine is self-sustaining and Ng has reached roughly 50%, switch the starter off if the simulated system has not disengaged it automatically.
  9. Bring the aircraft online. Switch on the generator and check for normal voltage or load. Turn off the auxiliary fuel pump if normal pressure remains, then switch on the avionics masters and allow the displays to boot.

What readings matter during a Kodiak start?

Ng, ITT and oil pressure tell you whether the PT6 start is progressing safely.

  • Ng: Confirms that the starter is rotating the compressor. Introduce fuel only after reaching the specified minimum.
  • ITT: Confirms light-off and warns of a hot start. Use the cockpit gauge's marked limit rather than relying on a memorised number from another PT6 aircraft.
  • Oil pressure: Must begin rising after light-off. Shut down if it does not develop within the period specified by the aircraft checklist.

Never keep attempting starts without pause. Starter duty-cycle and cooling limits still matter in a detailed add-on, even when MSFS does not visibly model every consequence.

Why won't the Quest Kodiak start?

Most failed Kodiak starts come from a closed fuel control, introducing fuel at the wrong time or a hardware axis overriding the cockpit condition lever.

Should the condition lever be at low or high idle?

Start and normally taxi the Kodiak at low idle; select high idle during the before-take-off checks when required by the aircraft checklist. High idle raises gas-generator speed and improves engine response, while cut-off stops fuel and is used for shutdown—not as an ordinary mixture setting.

Can Ctrl+E start the Quest Kodiak?

Ctrl+E may work when the aircraft build honours MSFS's default auto-start commands, but it can leave custom fuel selectors, generators or avionics in the wrong state. Use auto-start when speed matters; use the manual PT6 sequence when practising the aircraft or diagnosing a failed start.
