Does Train Sim World use Unreal Engine 5?

Ian Stephens
In short

Train Sim World uses a customised Unreal Engine 4 build, not UE5. Learn what SimuGraph does and why Nanite and Lumen cannot be enabled.

No. Train Sim World does not use Unreal Engine 5. The released series up to and including Train Sim World 6 is built on a heavily customised Unreal Engine 4 foundation, while Dovetail Games’ SimuGraph handles train physics and systems. UE5 technologies such as Nanite and Lumen are not part of its rendering pipeline.

Which engine does Train Sim World use?

Train Sim World combines Unreal Engine 4 with Dovetail Games’ proprietary simulation technology rather than relying on Unreal alone.

ComponentRole in Train Sim World
Unreal Engine 4Renders routes, trains, lighting, weather, interfaces and the surrounding world.
SimuGraphModels traction, braking, electrical and mechanical systems, and other train behaviour.
Route and locomotive contentSupplies the assets, materials, sounds, signalling setup and timetable that determine how each add-on looks and operates.

SimuGraph is not an alternative rendering engine and does not make Train Sim World an Unreal Engine 5 title. It runs alongside the customised UE4 codebase to provide the railway-specific simulation.

Why does Train Sim World sometimes look like an UE5 game?

Improved lighting, weather, reflections and detailed route assets can make newer Train Sim World releases look substantially different without an engine-generation change.

Developers can modify Unreal Engine 4, write custom shaders and improve individual assets without moving the whole product to UE5. Conversely, uneven scenery, distant shadows or inconsistent lighting often reflect route age and asset design rather than a different engine. Our assessment of realism across major train simulators explains why graphics technology is only one part of the comparison.

Do Train Sim World 5 and 6 use the same engine?

Train Sim World 5 and Train Sim World 6 use the same broad Unreal Engine 4 foundation, although the newer release can include revised rendering, gameplay and interface work.

A new title number does not by itself indicate a move from UE4 to UE5. See our detailed breakdown of the changes between Train Sim World 5 and 6 for the practical differences rather than treating the engine as the deciding factor.

Can Nanite or Lumen be enabled in Train Sim World?

No; Nanite and Lumen cannot be added to Train Sim World through a graphics menu, launch option or configuration edit because they depend on Unreal Engine 5.

Copying UE5 console variables into an Engine.ini file will not install those systems. Unsupported commands are usually ignored, while other configuration changes can introduce visual faults or instability. DLSS and similar upscaling features are separate technologies, so their presence does not prove that a game uses UE5.

Would Unreal Engine 5 automatically improve Train Sim World?

No; changing engines would not automatically deliver better image quality or higher frame rates.

Performance also depends on timetable density, train simulation, scenery draw calls, asset streaming, shadow settings and output resolution. Moving to UE5 would require routes, rolling stock, materials, shaders and platform builds to be migrated and retested. The benefits could differ considerably between the PC and console platforms supported by Train Sim World.

For players choosing between releases or add-ons, route quality, rolling-stock fidelity, timetable depth and performance on their hardware are more useful criteria than the Unreal Engine number.
