Use the simulator's dedicated RailDriver or joystick configuration when your version provides it. Confirm each axis and button on one locomotive before creating a larger profile, as cab controls and available hardware mappings differ between trains.
Flight joysticks and steering wheels are usually less convenient than an XInput gamepad unless the simulator exposes the axes you need. Spring-centred steering and throttle axes are a poor match for notched train controls, while unsupported virtual-axis tools can introduce the same duplicate-input faults as gamepad remappers.
