How do I set up a controller in Train Simulator Classic?

For Train Simulator Classic on PC, connect an Xbox/XInput controller before launch and enable the game’s controller option. For PlayStation, Switch-style, generic USB pads, joysticks or button boxes, use Steam Input to translate inputs into keyboard commands. The simulator has no modern, universal screen for binding arbitrary axes and buttons.

Controller support in Train Simulator Classic

An XInput-compatible Xbox controller is the simplest option because Train Simulator Classic includes a fixed Xbox-style control scheme. Other devices can work, but their inputs usually need translating through Steam Input rather than configuring inside the simulator.

How do I set up an Xbox controller?

The native setup requires an XInput controller connected and recognised before Train Simulator Classic starts.

  1. Connect the controller first. Pair it through Bluetooth or connect it by USB, then confirm that Windows or Steam can see its buttons and sticks.
  2. Launch Train Simulator Classic. Open Settings and find the Xbox controller option in the controls or gameplay area. It is traditionally labelled for an Xbox 360 controller, but modern Xbox pads normally use the same XInput system.
  3. Use only one input method. Leave Steam Input on its default setting or disable it for the first native test. Running native controller handling and a keyboard-mapped Steam layout together can produce duplicate commands.
  4. Test with standard rolling stock. Start a simple Quick Drive and watch the F4 HUD while moving the power, reverser and brakes. Our explanation of control modes and the F4 HUD covers the safest test setup.
  5. Keep the keyboard available. The native controller layout does not expose every cab switch, safety system or scripted function used by advanced locomotives.

There is no full native remapping screen. If the preset is uncomfortable or misses an essential command, switch to a Steam Input keyboard layout instead.

How do I use a PlayStation or generic controller?

Steam Input can make a PlayStation or generic pad behave like an Xbox controller, but mapping it directly to TSC keyboard commands gives greater control.

  1. Exit the simulator. Controller-mode changes are more reliable when Train Simulator Classic is not running.
  2. Enable Steam Input for the game. In the Steam Library, open Train Simulator Classic’s Properties and select the controller section. Enable Steam Input for this title; the exact client wording may vary.
  3. Open the controller layout. Start with a keyboard-and-mouse template rather than a gamepad template if you want custom bindings.
  4. Assign the driving commands. Use our full default keyboard-command list to map reverser, power, train brake, locomotive brake, horn and safety acknowledgement.
  5. Disable native controller mode in TSC. This prevents one button from sending both an Xbox command and a keyboard command.
  6. Save and test the layout. Hold each increase or decrease button while watching the corresponding F4 HUD control. Correct the binding before trying a demanding scenario.

Steam Input keyboard mapping is digital: holding a button sends repeated or sustained key input rather than placing a cab handle at an exact analogue position. Configure increase and decrease controls as held inputs, not toggles.

A practical controller layout

A usable layout puts the controls needed to stop the train under separate, easily reached buttons.

Some locomotives use a combined power-and-brake handle, while advanced add-ons may use scripted controls that do not follow every standard binding. Test the same controller layout on basic stock before blaming the hardware.

Why is my controller not working?

Most Train Simulator Classic controller failures come from detection, conflicting input layers or locomotive-specific scripting.

  • Nothing responds: close TSC completely, connect the controller, verify it in Steam’s controller test and relaunch the simulator.
  • Buttons act twice: native Xbox handling and Steam Input are both active. Disable one of them.
  • Steam sees the pad but TSC does not: map buttons to keyboard commands instead of relying on gamepad emulation.
  • A handle keeps moving: remove toggle or rapid-repeat behaviour from that binding and check the stick or trigger dead zone.
  • Only one locomotive fails: try standard stock. The affected locomotive may use custom scripts, cab controls or non-standard key commands.
  • Steam Input is ignored: remove any forced administrator setting from the simulator unless it is genuinely required. Different privilege levels can interfere with Steam’s input layer.

Can I use true analogue train controls?

Train Simulator Classic cannot assign arbitrary joystick axes through a universal in-game calibration screen. Native Xbox behaviour is preset, while Steam keyboard mapping changes controls in digital increments.

For physical throttle, reverser and brake levers, RailDriver is the purpose-built option. Generic joysticks and button boxes remain useful for extra switches, but do not expect their lever travel to align automatically with every locomotive’s cab controls.
