Transponder squawk codes are four-digit identifiers entered in an aircraft’s transponder so air traffic control can associate its surveillance return with a flight. Pilots use an ATC-assigned code when receiving a surveillance service, a regional conspicuity code when no discrete code is assigned, and recognised emergency codes for unlawful interference, radio failure or a general emergency.
In Aviation & Real-World Flying, squawk is both a noun for the selected code and a verb used in instructions such as “squawk 4271”. Each digit can only be 0 through 7, giving 4,096 possible combinations, although many are reserved or allocated for particular purposes.
How does a transponder squawk code work?
A squawk code labels the aircraft on ATC’s surveillance display; it does not contain the route, clearance or pilot’s intentions. A Mode A reply carries the selected code, while altitude reporting through Mode C or Mode S sends pressure altitude separately.
Mode S equipment also has a fixed 24-bit aircraft address and may transmit a flight identification, but pilots still enter the assigned four-digit squawk. These are different identifiers and should not be confused.

When should pilots set or change a squawk code?
Pilots set or change a squawk when instructed by ATC, when a published procedure requires a conspicuity code, or when an emergency code is appropriate.
- Read back the assignment: Repeat all four digits, including any leading zero. This lets the controller catch a misheard code before it appears against the wrong flight.
- Enter and verify the code: Check every digit before confirming it. With older rotary equipment, avoid passing unnecessarily through 7500, 7600 or 7700 while changing codes.
- Select the required mode: The correct code is little use if the transponder remains in standby. Altitude-reporting mode is normally required in flight and is also used on the ground under many modern airport procedures; follow the aircraft checklist, local rules and ATC instructions.
- Retain it until told otherwise: A frequency change does not by itself cancel the assigned code. Keep the existing squawk until another controller assigns a replacement or a published procedure says to change it.
Which VFR squawk code should pilots use?
There is no worldwide VFR squawk code. For example, 1200 is widely used for VFR flight in the United States, while 7000 is the general conspicuity code in the United Kingdom, but both systems have exceptions.
Use the code published for the country, flight information region and type of operation. When crossing a boundary, do not assume the code should change automatically; follow the published procedure or an ATC instruction.
What do squawk codes 7500, 7600 and 7700 mean?
The three internationally recognised emergency squawk codes indicate unlawful interference, radio failure and a general emergency.

These codes alert controllers but do not replace a radio call, checklist or published emergency procedure. If an emergency code is selected accidentally, correct it promptly and tell ATC if communication is available.
What does “squawk IDENT” mean?
“Squawk IDENT” means press the transponder’s IDENT button once so the aircraft’s target is temporarily highlighted on the controller’s display. It does not mean changing the four-digit code.
Use IDENT only when ATC requests it or a specific procedure requires it. It is not a general acknowledgement button, and holding or repeatedly pressing it provides no benefit.
What squawk-code mistakes should pilots avoid?
Most squawk errors come from entering the right digits in the wrong mode, changing an assigned code too early or confusing the code with another aircraft identifier.
- Leaving the transponder in standby: Verify the operating and altitude-reporting mode, not just the displayed digits.
- Using 8 or 9: Squawk codes use octal digits, so only 0 through 7 are valid.
- Dropping a leading zero:
0452is a four-digit code and is not interchangeable with452. - Changing after every handover: Keep the assigned code through frequency changes unless instructed otherwise.
- Selecting an emergency code for practice: Never use 7500, 7600 or 7700 casually on an active ATC or multiplayer service.
- Confusing code, flight ID and aircraft address: These are separate Mode A and Mode S data items.

How are squawk codes used in flight simulators?
Flight simulators reproduce the same basic procedure: receive a code, enter all four digits, select the required transponder mode and use IDENT only when requested. Simplified ATC or assistance settings may enter the code automatically, while detailed aircraft normally expect manual operation.
