How do I uninstall AutoFPS from Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Uninstall AutoFPS from Microsoft Flight Simulator cleanly, remove startup entries and saved settings, and avoid deleting Community add-ons.

To uninstall AutoFPS from Microsoft Flight Simulator, exit AutoFPS, remove any shortcut or scheduled launch you created, then delete its extracted application folder. AutoFPS is a separate Windows utility, not a Community-folder package, so do not delete MSFS add-ons or reinstall the simulator.

These instructions apply to Windows PCs running Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024. AutoFPS cannot be installed directly on Xbox or PlayStation consoles.

How do I remove AutoFPS completely?

Complete removal means stopping the executable, removing its launch mechanism and deleting only the files belonging to AutoFPS.

  1. Close Microsoft Flight Simulator and AutoFPS. Exit AutoFPS from its window or notification-area icon. Open Task Manager and confirm that no AutoFPS process remains; otherwise Windows may report that its files are in use.
  2. Disable automatic launching. If the application remains accessible, turn off its auto-start option before closing it. Also check Windows Startup Apps, the Startup folder and Task Scheduler for an entry that explicitly names AutoFPS or points to its executable. Remove only that entry.
  3. Check Windows Installed apps. Search for AutoFPS under Installed apps, called Apps & features on some Windows versions. If it appears, use its Uninstall command. Many AutoFPS releases are portable and will not have an entry here.
  4. Delete the extracted AutoFPS folder. For a portable copy, this is the actual uninstall step. Delete the directory into which you extracted the downloaded application, along with any duplicate copies you no longer want.
  5. Remove shortcuts and optional saved data. Delete AutoFPS shortcuts from the desktop or Start menu. Most portable files disappear with the application folder, but a build may retain user data under %APPDATA% or %LOCALAPPDATA%. Remove a folder there only if its name and contents clearly identify it as AutoFPS; do not delete a general Microsoft Flight Simulator directory.
  6. Restart Windows if necessary. A restart releases locked files and confirms that no remaining startup entry launches the utility.

If Windows still reports that a file is open, end the relevant AutoFPS process in Task Manager or restart the PC, then delete the folder. You do not need to uninstall Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Should I delete AutoFPS from the Community folder?

No. AutoFPS is an external PC companion utility rather than a normal Community-folder add-on, as explained in our overview of how AutoFPS works and when it is useful.

Do not remove anything from the Community or Official folders as part of a normal AutoFPS uninstall. If you mistakenly extracted the application into Community, delete only the exact AutoFPS application directory you placed there—not neighbouring aircraft, scenery or libraries.

Why does AutoFPS still start after I deleted it?

If AutoFPS launches after its main folder was deleted, Windows is finding a second copy or another launcher is starting it.

  • Search Startup Apps for an AutoFPS entry.
  • Press Win+R, enter shell:startup and remove a shortcut that points to AutoFPS.
  • Check Task Scheduler for a task specifically created for the utility.
  • Inspect any batch file, launcher or desktop shortcut you configured to start MSFS and companion applications together.
  • Search your drives for another extracted AutoFPS executable before assuming the deletion failed.

An orphaned startup shortcut may instead produce a “file not found” message. Remove that shortcut or scheduled task; reinstalling AutoFPS merely to clear the message is unnecessary.

Will uninstalling AutoFPS restore MSFS graphics settings?

Uninstalling AutoFPS stops future dynamic adjustments, but it does not deliberately reset every Microsoft Flight Simulator graphics option.

Restart MSFS after closing the utility so the simulator loads its own configured values afresh. Then review settings AutoFPS was allowed to manage, particularly terrain and object level of detail and any other supported performance controls, and choose the fixed values you want to use without automation.

Should I reset AutoFPS instead of uninstalling it?

Keep AutoFPS and reset or reconfigure it when the problem is an unsuitable frame-rate target, aggressive LOD changes or another incorrect preference. Our AutoFPS configuration guidance for MSFS 2020 and 2024 covers those choices.

If you are removing it only because it will not open, connect or detect the simulator, try the focused AutoFPS connection and startup fixes first. Delete the utility when you no longer want dynamic performance management or when troubleshooting requires a clean replacement copy.
