How do I update X-Plane 12 to the latest version?

To update X-Plane 12, close the simulator and run the X-Plane 12 Installer, select Update X-Plane, choose the correct installation folder, and leave beta updates disabled for the latest stable build. Steam editions update through Steam instead. Back up modified default files before either method.

Which X-Plane 12 updater should I use?

Your purchase and installation type determines which updater manages X-Plane 12.

The X-Plane updater is not normally a complete replacement download. It scans the selected installation, downloads files that differ from the chosen release and can repair missing or corrupted stock files.

How to update X-Plane 12 with the installer

Standalone copies are updated by running the X-Plane 12 Installer outside the simulator and selecting the installation root.

1. Close X-Plane and related utilities. Make sure the simulator, plugin managers and any application using files inside its folder have stopped.
2. Back up anything you cannot replace. A normal update should preserve third-party folders, but keep copies of custom aircraft, scenery, plugins, preferences and logbooks. Files edited inside a default aircraft, default scenery package or Resources may be replaced.
3. Run a recent X-Plane 12 Installer. Select Update X-Plane. If you only have an older installer or have deleted it, obtain another copy through the official account or installation source associated with your purchase.
4. Select the correct X-Plane 12 folder. Choose the root containing the X-Plane executable and folders such as Aircraft, Custom Scenery, Output and Resources. Do not select one of those subfolders. A mistake we see often is updating one copy while a desktop shortcut launches another.
5. Choose stable or beta. Keep the beta option disabled for the latest recommended public release. Enable it only when you deliberately want a test build.
6. Complete the scan and download. If asked about modified stock files, replacing them restores the official versions. Preserve a separate copy of any manual edits before doing so.
7. Verify the updated build. Launch the same installation you selected and check the displayed build information or the opening section of Log.txt. Test a default aircraft at a default airport before loading third-party content.

Each standalone X-Plane folder is independent. If you maintain separate stable and beta copies, repeat the process for each folder you intend to update.

How to update the Steam edition of X-Plane 12

Steam editions must be updated through Steam rather than the standalone X-Plane installer.

1. Exit X-Plane 12. Confirm that it is no longer running in the background.
2. Check Steam's download queue. Resume any paused or scheduled X-Plane 12 download and wait for installation to finish.
3. Check the selected branch. Open X-Plane 12's Steam properties and inspect the beta selection. Choose no beta branch for the latest stable build; Steam's wording may differ between client versions.
4. Verify installed files if needed. Steam's file-verification function restores missing or damaged stock files. It can also replace stock files you modified, so back those up first.

If no download appears, restart Steam, check its download settings and confirm that the drive has enough free space. Reinstalling the entire simulator should be a last resort, not the first repair step.

Is this the latest X-Plane 12 version?

The updater and selected release channel provide a more reliable answer than a version number printed in an article, which becomes outdated whenever a new build is released.

• Standalone: select the correct folder, disable beta updates and run Update X-Plane. If the scan reports that no update is required, that copy has the latest stable build offered through the installer.
• Steam: select no beta branch and finish every pending X-Plane 12 download. Steam will then manage the stable build assigned to that branch.

Check the actual build in X-Plane or near the start of Log.txt. The opening lines also help identify which installation path you launched. If the version you expected is not there, confirm that the announcement concerned X-Plane 12 desktop rather than X-Plane 11, X-Plane Mobile or a beta release.

Is a 2.1 GB X-Plane 12 update normal?

A 2.1 GB download can be normal because update size depends on the files changed, the build already installed and any stock files that need repairing. Another user may receive a different-sized download for the same target release.

Keep more free space than the displayed download size because the updater may need temporary room to unpack and replace files. Scenery installation can require substantially more space than a core simulator update.

Should I install the latest X-Plane 12 beta?

Use the stable release for routine flying and choose a beta only when you are willing to test unfinished changes and diagnose compatibility problems.

A beta may contain newer simulator code, but aircraft systems, graphics behaviour, weather, plugins and scenery tools can break between test builds. For an installer-managed copy, duplicating a known-working X-Plane folder before opting into a beta provides a practical fallback, provided you have enough storage.

To return to stable, disable beta updates in the installer or leave Steam's beta branch, then run the update or file-verification process again. This restores stable stock files, but it does not automatically undo changed preferences or repair incompatible add-ons.

What next after X-Plane 12 finishes updating?

Launch the updated simulator once with a default aircraft and minimal third-party content before returning to your normal setup.

• Allow the first launch to complete: it may take longer while X-Plane refreshes data and caches.
• Test basic operation: load a default aircraft at a default airport and check graphics, controls, sound and weather.

X-Plane 12 updates also do not update X-Plane 11, graphics drivers, headset software, traffic clients or other external applications.

Why won't X-Plane 12 update?

Most failed updates come from using the wrong update method, selecting the wrong installation folder, insufficient free space, blocked file access or expecting a beta while using the stable channel.

The installer does not appear or is missing

The standalone installer is a separate application; it does not have to appear inside X-Plane's menus. Download another X-Plane 12 Installer from the official source associated with your purchase if your copy is missing. Steam users should not expect this installer because Steam manages their files.

If the installer will not open, cannot connect, reports permission errors or repeatedly stalls, work through our installer failure and permissions checks.

The new version is not there, or nothing changed

Check the installation path and build recorded near the start of Log.txt. If you have several copies, an old shortcut may still launch an untouched folder even though the updater completed successfully elsewhere.

Also check the release channel. A beta version will not appear while beta updates are disabled, while a stable build may not replace a newer beta until you leave the beta channel and run the updater or file verification again.

The download stalls or verification fails

Close the updater, free additional disk space and confirm that your user account can write to the complete X-Plane folder. Protected operating-system folders, disconnected external drives and read-only permissions are common causes.

Check whether security software quarantined or blocked the installer rather than permanently disabling protection. On Steam, clear paused downloads, restart the client and verify the installed files.

X-Plane crashes after the update

Test a default aircraft without third-party plugins before assuming the core update is damaged. Temporarily move only third-party plugin folders out of Resources/plugins, leaving stock components untouched, then restore add-ons in small groups.

Inspect the final portion of Log.txt for the aircraft, scenery package or plugin loaded immediately before the failure. Do not copy an entire old Resources folder over the updated installation; that can silently restore incompatible stock files and leave X-Plane in a mixed-version state.
