FS2004 has no native VR, but you can use a headset as a virtual screen or add experimental head tracking. Follow the practical setup steps.
FS2004 has no native VR support, so it cannot deliver modern OpenXR-style stereoscopic VR, six-degree-of-freedom tracking or motion-controller input. You can still play it on a large virtual screen inside a PC VR headset, then optionally translate headset movement into TrackIR-compatible view controls with third-party bridging software.
What kind of VR works with FS2004?
The dependable option is to display Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 as a conventional Windows application on a virtual screen inside the headset. This gives you an immersive large display, but the image remains flat rather than stereoscopic.

A standalone headset must be connected or streamed to the Windows PC running FS2004. How do you display FS2004 in a VR headset?
- Connect the headset to the PC. Start its PC runtime and confirm that you can see and control the ordinary Windows desktop inside the headset before opening FS2004.
- Open the runtime's desktop or theatre view. Create a virtual monitor large enough to read instruments without using an excessive rendering resolution.
- Launch FS2004 in windowed mode. Press
Alt+Enterto switch between full-screen and windowed display. Windowed mode is usually captured more reliably by headset desktop viewers. - Select the virtual cockpit. A 2D panel will work, but it remains a fixed dashboard. The virtual cockpit is required if you intend to add view tracking, and some add-on aircraft have more complete virtual cockpits than others.

Can headset movement control the FS2004 cockpit view?
Headset tracking can control the cockpit only when bridging software converts the headset's pose into an input that FS2004 understands. Desktop or theatre mode alone tracks your position relative to the virtual screen; it does not move the simulator's camera.
- Choose a compatible output method. The bridge must provide TrackIR-compatible output, joystick view axes or mouse-look input recognised by FS2004. Compatibility varies because FS2004 is a 32-bit DirectX 9-era application.
- Start the software in the correct order. Run the headset runtime first, the tracking bridge second and FS2004 last so the bridge can detect both ends of the connection.
- Configure yaw and pitch first. Confirm that looking left, right, up and down works before enabling roll or positional movement. Excessive translation causes cockpit clipping and unnatural instrument scale.
- Assign an accessible centre command. Re-centre the headset while seated normally, then centre the tracking output. Put this command on the joystick or yoke rather than the keyboard.
- Control how the virtual screen follows you. If available, use a head-locked or follow-head screen. A room-fixed screen can slide out of sight while the bridge turns the in-simulator camera.

Why is FS2004 black or unresponsive in the headset?
- Black simulator window: switch FS2004 to windowed mode, start the headset runtime before the simulator and temporarily disable overlays or graphics injectors. On dual-GPU laptops, the desktop viewer and FS2004 may also need to use the same graphics processor.
- Headset moves but the cockpit does not: this is normal in virtual-desktop mode. Install and configure a compatible pose bridge if you want the simulator view to follow your head.
- The virtual screen moves away when turning: change it from room-fixed to head-following mode, or disable one of two overlapping tracking methods.
- Buttons cannot be operated with VR controllers: use the mouse, keyboard or mapped physical controls. A controller acting as a desktop pointer is not the same as native VR hand interaction.
- Judder despite acceptable monitor performance: headset streaming is sensitive to uneven frame delivery. Lower demanding scenery and weather settings rather than increasing the virtual monitor resolution.
Should you use a DirectX 9 VR injector?
A stereo injector is only suitable for experimentation, not as the baseline FS2004 VR setup. These tools intercept the old DirectX rendering path and may create apparent depth, but 2D gauges, menus, clouds, reflections and add-on panels can appear at the wrong depth or in only one eye.
Any injector must support 32-bit DirectX 9 applications. Test it first with an unmodified default aircraft, remove other overlays and keep a backup of every simulator file or configuration it changes. If FS2004 crashes before reaching the flight screen, returns a black image or develops unreadable gauges, remove the injector and use the virtual-screen method instead.
Is VR or TrackIR better for FS2004?
Use a headset in virtual-desktop mode when you want a private, very large display. Choose TrackIR with a normal monitor when responsive cockpit head movement matters more than wearing a headset; it is not VR, but it fits FS2004's view system far better.
For genuine stereoscopic cockpits, positional tracking and VR controller interaction, a simulator designed with native VR support is the better choice. No scenery package, aircraft add-on or FS2004 configuration switch can add those facilities to the original simulator engine.
