A stable 25 FPS generally looks better in FS2004 than a frame rate fluctuating between 25 and 60. The simulator is also sensitive to CPU-heavy AI traffic, add-on gauges, autogen and clouds, so a fast graphics card alone does not guarantee a high rate.
How do I find the best target frame rate?
- Load a demanding flight. Use the aircraft, airport, weather and AI traffic you normally fly. Testing a default aircraft over empty countryside gives a misleading result.
- Display the frame rate. Press
Shift+Zuntil FS2004 shows its red performance text. - Set a 30 FPS target. Open
Options > Settings > Display > Hardwareand move the Target frame rate slider to 30. - Test on the ground and in flight. Taxi, change cockpit views and pan around near detailed scenery. Watch for repeated drops, pauses and ground textures that remain blurred.
- Adjust one variable at a time. If the simulator stays near 30, keep it there. If it regularly falls well below the target, reduce demanding graphics or traffic settings and test again. Use 25 FPS when 30 remains inconsistent.

Why is Unlimited usually worse in FS2004?
Unlimited allows FS2004 to render as many frames as possible, but that can leave less processing time for scenery loading, AI traffic and complex panel gauges. The result may be a higher displayed average accompanied by stutters, inconsistent cockpit panning or blurry terrain.
The mistake we see constantly is choosing Unlimited because the computer is newer than the simulator. FS2004 relies heavily on a limited number of CPU threads, and older engine behaviour still applies on modern hardware. A sustainable cap gives the simulator useful headroom.

Why does FS2004 fall below the selected target?
The Target frame rate setting is a ceiling, not a guaranteed minimum. Setting it to 30 prevents FS2004 from deliberately rendering faster than that; it cannot turn a 17 FPS situation into 30 FPS.
Frequent drops usually point to one or more of these loads:
- Dense AI aircraft, especially at a major hub
- Complex add-on aircraft and gauge code
- High autogen and scenery-complexity settings
- Detailed airport scenery
- Multiple cloud layers and poor visibility
- Extra views or multiple monitors
Reduce the feature causing the load rather than repeatedly lowering the cap. AI traffic is often the first useful test at airports, while cloud detail and autogen matter more during general flying.
Is 60 FPS better in FS2004?
Sixty FPS can make panning smoother, but it is worthwhile only when FS2004 can sustain it in the flights you actually make. Chasing 60 at the cost of scenery sharpness, stable gauges or consistent frame delivery is usually a poor trade in this simulator.

Also check for an external frame limiter or forced vertical synchronisation in the graphics driver. Two different caps can produce uneven pacing; establish a baseline with FS2004’s own limiter before introducing another one. For most installations, the dependable answer remains 30 FPS, falling back to 25 FPS when necessary.
