The aircraft matters as well. Keyboard control is adequate for an airliner once the autopilot is engaged, but it is frustrating in helicopters, aerobatic aircraft and anything requiring constant small corrections.

How do I set up a gamepad in FSX?

Assign the analogue sticks to FSX's axis commands, not to the separate directional commands for left, right, up and down.

  1. Connect the gamepad before starting FSX. Open the simulator's Controls settings and select the controller from the device list.
  2. Assign the main axes. Map one stick to Aileron Axis and Elevator Axis. Reverse an axis if the aircraft responds in the wrong direction.
  3. Choose a rudder method. Triggers can work when Windows and FSX expose them as a centred combined axis. If they do not centre correctly, use buttons or enable Autorudder instead.
  4. Remove duplicate assignments. FSX may automatically map several devices to the same throttle, rudder or view function. Duplicate axes are a common cause of wandering and oscillation.
  5. Adjust sensitivity and the null zone. Begin with relatively high axis sensitivity and a small null zone. Increase the null zone only enough to stop an ageing stick from drifting around its centre.
  6. Test the full range. Use a simple trainer on the ground and confirm that the cockpit yoke or control column moves smoothly to both limits and returns to centre.

A practical gamepad layout uses the left stick for pitch and roll, the right stick for views, shoulder controls for rudder or throttle, and face buttons for brakes, trim, flaps and landing gear. Keep elevator trim easy to reach; trying to hold a constant stick deflection throughout the flight makes precise control unnecessarily difficult.

Can I fly FSX with the keyboard only?

Yes, keyboard-only flying works best with gentle aircraft, small control taps, careful trimming and some help from Autorudder or the autopilot.

On the standard assignment, the numeric keypad controls the primary flight surfaces: Num 4 and Num 6 command bank, while Num 2 and Num 8 control pitch. Num 5 is the usual centring command for lateral and yaw inputs. Throttle, brakes, flaps, trim and autopilot functions also have keyboard commands.

Do not hold a direction key until the aircraft reaches the required attitude. Use short taps, centre the control, then trim away the remaining pressure. A mistake we see constantly is treating the pitch keys like elevator trim; the aircraft then begins a growing climb or descent as soon as attention moves elsewhere.

How does the FSX mouse yoke work?

The mouse yoke turns pointer movement into proportional elevator and aileron input, giving smoother control than ordinary keys without additional hardware.

With standard assignments, Ctrl+Y toggles mouse flight control. The pointer's position relative to the centre determines the input, so small movements are essential. Toggle the mode off when you need to operate cockpit switches or menus; combining mouse steering with detailed virtual-cockpit interaction quickly becomes awkward.

How can I control the rudder without pedals?

Use a gamepad axis or buttons for direct yaw control, or enable FSX's Autorudder option when no suitable analogue axis is available.

Autorudder links yaw assistance to your bank input and is usually sufficient for ordinary fixed-wing flying. It is less suitable for crosswind landings, helicopters and deliberate slips, where independent rudder control matters. Why do the controls drift, reverse or feel too sensitive?

Joystick-free controls usually feel wrong because of duplicate assignments, axis reversal, controller drift or an input mapped as buttons instead of an axis.

  • Aircraft immediately rolls or yaws: remove duplicate axis assignments and enlarge the null zone slightly.
  • Control moves only fully on or fully off: replace the directional button assignments with the corresponding axis assignment.
  • Pitch or roll is reversed: select the reverse-axis option for that assignment.
  • Keyboard commands do nothing: check Num Lock, laptop function-key behaviour and any customised control profile.
  • Propeller aircraft veers during take-off: some movement is caused by engine torque, propeller effects or crosswind rather than faulty controls.

When is a joystick worth buying for FSX?

A joystick becomes worthwhile when you regularly hand-fly approaches, helicopters, military aircraft or light aeroplanes and want finer control than a gamepad's short sticks provide.

For occasional airliner flying, a gamepad plus keyboard is usually enough. If manual flying is the main attraction, even an entry-level stick adds a longer control range, a centring spring, a dedicated throttle and often a twist-rudder axis.
