Learn to attach, lift, carry and release helicopter sling loads in FSX, operate the hoist winch, assign controls and fix failed pickups.
To use helicopter sling loads and winches in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, fly a compatible helicopter in a mission or flight containing a hookable object. Stabilise above the target, deploy and lower the hoist or sling, engage the pickup, lift vertically, fly gently, then lower and release the load.
What do sling loads and winches require in FSX?
Native sling and hoist operations require the Acceleration feature set, a suitably configured helicopter and an object designed to be picked up. Boxed retail FSX normally needs Acceleration installed, while FSX: Steam Edition includes its content and functionality; our explanation of what Acceleration adds to FSX covers the edition differences.
FSX cannot attach its cable to an arbitrary building, vehicle or scenery object. The target must have sling-load data or be controlled by a mission script. Likewise, a helicopter may show a decorative winch without implementing FSX's working hoist system.

Which FSX sling and hoist controls should I assign?
Check the helicopter controls under Options > Settings > Controls before approaching the load. Look for control names containing Sling or Hoist; wording can differ slightly between editions and controller profiles.

Custom assignments, keyboard layouts and add-on aircraft can change these commands, so the Controls screen is authoritative. Some configurations label O only as Sling Load Release, and many mission loads attach automatically once the hook enters their pickup radius.
How do I pick up and carry a sling load?
- Load the supplied mission or saved flight. This ensures both the compatible helicopter and hookable cargo are present. Merely flying to the same location in an unrelated Free Flight session may not load the cargo object.
- Approach into wind and establish a steady hover. Use normal simulation rate and settle before lowering or positioning the hook. If holding position is the main problem, start with our helicopter control and hover setup.
- Position the hook over the attachment point. Follow the hook rather than the rotor mast: a side-mounted hoist can place the cable several feet away from the helicopter's centre. Use an external or dedicated hoist camera if the aircraft supplies one.
- Enter the pickup zone. Lower an adjustable cable if available, or move a fixed sling hook close to the target. Many loads attach automatically; if the mission requests it, operate the sling pickup command once.
- Take the strain gradually. Raise the cable or collective until the line becomes taut, pause, then lift vertically. Dragging the object across the ground can start a violent swing or break the cable.
- Accelerate and turn gently. Keep the load clear of terrain, avoid abrupt pedal or cyclic inputs, and allow for the extra weight. Begin slowing well before the destination rather than trying to stop directly above it.
- Set the load down before releasing it. Descend until the cargo rests securely and the cable slackens, then use the sling release command. Releasing while the cable is still carrying weight drops the object and may fail the mission.
How do I operate a helicopter winch or hoist?
A winch operation uses the same careful hover but adds a deployable arm and controllable cable length. FSX generally calls this system a hoist.
- Deploy the hoist arm while clear of obstacles.
- Hold a stable hover with the hoist point above or beside the target, according to the aircraft's geometry.
- Pay out the cable slowly. Keep the hook close to the target without striking the ground or sweeping it sideways.
- Wait for attachment confirmation. Rescue missions often attach the survivor automatically or display a message when the hook enters the scripted capture area.
- Reel the cable in smoothly. Keep it nearly vertical and avoid climbing away faster than the winch can recover it.
- Retract the cable fully. Some missions do not register the rescue until the target reaches the helicopter or crosses a specific trigger point. Do not press the sling-release control unless the briefing explicitly requires it.
- Stow the arm only after the target and cable are secure.
Why won't the sling load or winch attach?
Failed pickups are usually caused by incompatible equipment, poor hook alignment or an unmet mission condition rather than a faulty helicopter flight model.

How do I stop a sling load from swinging?
Preventing the swing is easier than correcting it: lift vertically, accelerate slowly and make shallow, coordinated turns. A mistake we see constantly is chasing the load with large cyclic movements, which adds energy to the pendulum instead of damping it.
If oscillation begins, reduce speed gradually and make small corrections timed to settle the helicopter over the load. Do not use Slew mode or a high simulation rate during attachment and delivery; both can upset mission triggers and sling physics.
Can I practise sling loads outside the default missions?
You can practise in an add-on mission or saved flight that supplies the necessary cargo object and aircraft configuration. A purpose-built scenario is far more reliable than trying to attach a cable to ordinary scenery.
